2003 Chevrolet Corvette Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2003 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To replace the engine front cover, first gather the necessary tools: front and rear cover alignment (Crankshaft Oil Seal Area) (J41476) and crankshaft front oil seal installer (J41478). Start by disassembling the crankshaft balancer along with the Water Pump before removing the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts followed by the front cover bolts. Lift off the front cover and gasket before discarding the outdated gasket. To replace the engine front cover first clean and inspect the components while keeping the crankshaft oil seal and front cover gasket for replacement only and not applying sealer to the front cover gasket unless explicitly stated. Place 20-mm-long 0.20-inch-sealing bead of gm U.S. P/N 12378190 or equivalent sealant at the engine block to Oil Pan junction before installing the front cover gasket and cover. Use a torque wrench to tighten the front cover bolts and Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts to the proper torque value without exceeding the recommended values. The j41476 device must be used to correctly position the front cover by matching its tapered legs to the machined surfaces. Secure the crankshaft balancer bolt into position before torquing the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts and engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Use the j41476 to position the front cover while avoiding lubrication of the oil seal sealing surface and discard the crankshaft oil seal. Apply clean engine oil to the new oil seal edge as well as the front cover seal bore area. Slide the j41478 guide into position before inserting the threaded rod through the crankshaft end along with the nut, washer, guide and oil seal. Use the j41476 to install the oil seal by applying torque with one wrench on the hex of the installer bolt as you turn another wrench clockwise to fully seat the seal. Make sure the oil seal is positioned evenly inside its appropriate installation area before reinstalling the Water Pump and crankshaft balancer.
