2004 Chevrolet Corvette Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2004 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To replace the engine front cover, you need to collect the following tools: front and rear cover alignment (Crankshaft Oil Seal Area) (J41476) and crankshaft front oil seal installer (J41478). Starting with the removal of the crankshaft balancer and the Water Pump, then the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts and the front cover bolts. Remove the front cover and the gasket and throw the old gasket away and clean and check the engine front cover. When installing do not reuse the crankshaft oil seal or front cover gasket and do not use any sealant to the front cover gasket unless told to do so. Seal with a 5 mm (0.20-in) bead of sealant gm U.S. P/N 12378190, or opt., 20 mm (0.80-in) long, at the Oil Pan to engine block seam. Fit the new front cover gasket and cover making the front cover bolts just snugged and the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts done the same way. Use the j41476 to ensure the front cover aligns in the position of the tapered legs that align with the machined surfaces. Tighten the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts and engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Remove the j41476, and lubricate the outer edge of the oil seal and the front cover oil seal using clean engine oil. Install j41478 crankshaft front oil seal into j41478 guide and then insert the j41478 threaded rod with nut, washer, guide, and oil seal into the end of the crankshaft. You can use the j41476 to seat the oil seal in cover bore to the installer bolt hex using one wrench while turning the installer nut clockwise with the other until the seal faces completely. Check the oil seal for the correct installation and that it is even and complete in the front cover bore. Lastly, adjust the Water Pump and crankshaft balancer.
