2005 Chevrolet Corvette Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2005 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To replace the engine front cover, first, gather the necessary tools: front/rear cover alignment - oil pan surface (J41480) and front and rear cover alignment (Crankshaft Oil Seal Area) (J41476). Start by removing the crankshaft balancer then move to the Water Pump. Remove the front cover bolts (501) to detach the front cover (502) while eliminating the gasket (503). Dispose of the previous gasket at this time. Start by cleaning and inspecting the engine front cover followed by removing the oil seal (140) and the bolts (705, 738), Camshaft Position Sensor (703) and wire harness (737). When removing the sensor, remember to take out the o-ring (704). As part of installation refrain from using the original crankshaft oil seal alongside the engine front cover gasket, and refrain from applying sealants to the front cover gasket unless explicitly instructed. Put in the front cover gasket (503) and front cover (502) and bolts (501) while keeping the tightening force light and avoiding over-tightening. Start the tool-to-front cover bolts without tightening them and then install the j41480 while tightening the tool-to-engine block bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Position the tapered feet of the j41476 alongside the machined alignment planes found on the front cover section. By hand-tightening the crankshaft balancer bolt first, you can then progress to tightening the j41480 and the engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Use a straightedge to check the oil pan surface while ensuring the front cover rests flat or no more than 0.5 mm (0.02 inch) below flush. Realign the front cover or replace it with a new one whenever measured alignment does not meet specifications. Examine the o-ring (704) at the Camshaft Position Sensor for damage then lubricate it with engine oil before placing the o-ring onto sensor (703) before installing the sensor onto the cover. Finally, install the Camshaft Position Sensor wire harness (737) and bolts (705, 738), tightening them to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.)tightening the Water Pump and crankshaft balancer completes the installation.
