Timing Cover

To replace the engine front cover, first gather the necessary tools: front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476). Start by removing the Water Pump with the cmp sensor and crankshaft balancer and Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts together with the front cover bolts. The initial step is to remove the front cover together with the gasket after which you need to take away the oil front crankshaft oil seal before discarding the front cover gasket. When installing the front cover avoid repeating the use of crankshaft oil seal or front cover gasket as well as eliminate front cover gasket sealer application unless factory specifications allow it. First apply a 5 mm (0.2 inch) sealant bead gm p/n 12378190 or equivalent that measures 20 mm (0.8 inch) long at the Oil Pan to engine block junction point. Place the front cover gasket and cover after this application. Tighten the front cover bolts as well as the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts while maintaining a balance of tightness but avoiding excessive force. Use front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476) to line up the tapered legs with front cover machined alignment surfaces. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt until it reaches a snug fit before torquing the engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the cmp sensor and new crankshaft front oil seal before reinstalling the Water Pump and the crankshaft balancer after removing the front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476).

Fill the engine with coolant.

Remove the engine front cover with the water pump and disassemble it, taking care to avoid sharp or metal gasket scrapers on the sealing surfaces.

Install the camshaft covers, and for LLT engines, the intake manifold; for LP1 and LY7 engines, install the upper intake manifold with the lower intake manifold.

Use the Draining and Filling Cooling System (GE 47716) and the appropriate methods for LP1, LY7 Static Fill, or LS2 Static Fill.

Reposition the power steering fluid reservoir for access, remove the power steering pump upper front bolt, and loosen the remaining bolts.

Apply a 5 mm (0.2 in) bead of sealant 20 mm (0.8 in) long to the engine block, directly onto the tabs of the new front cover gasket.

Install the new front cover gasket (503), front cover (502), and bolts (501), tightening them finger tight without overtightening.

Repeat the cover alignment procedure or replace the front cover if necessary.

Remove the 7 mm center bolt and the remaining engine front cover bolts.

Connect the camshaft position sensor wire harness (737) and bolts (705, 738), tightening the bolts to 12 N.m (106 lb in), then reinstall the water pump and crankshaft balancer.

Install the J 41480 and tighten the tool-to-engine block bolts to 25 Nm (18 lb ft), aligning the tapered legs of the tool with the machined alignment surfaces on the front cover.

First, remove the water pump, crankshaft balancer, and oil pan.

Tighten them to 25 Nm (18 lb ft).

Install the front cover gasket and cover, then snug the front cover bolts and oil pan-to-front cover bolts without overtightening.

Reinstall the CMP sensor, a new crankshaft front oil seal, the water pump, and the crankshaft balancer.

Disconnect the CMP sensor wiring harness jumper from the CMP sensor and remove the CMP sensor from the wiring harness jumper.

First, drain the engine coolant.

Install it to the front cover, aligning its tapered legs with the machined surfaces.

First, remove the water pump and crankshaft balancer.

Remove the 7 mm center bolt and loosen the remaining engine front cover bolts. Use the Cover Alignment Pins (J 44219) by placing two of the front cover bolts in the jack screw holes on the front cover and tightening them evenly.

Align the oil pump to the crankshaft sprocket splines and install the front cover, tightening the center bolt last to a torque of 10 N.m (89 lb in).

Remove the crankshaft balancer and the power steering pump.

Connect the engine wiring harness electrical connector from the CMP sensor wiring harness jumper, ensuring not to reuse the original CKP sensor O-ring seal.

Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts and the front cover bolts.

Then remove the crankshaft balancer.

Remove the CMP sensor bolt and take out the CMP sensor along with the wiring harness jumper from the engine front cover.
