2005 Chevrolet Corvette Timing Chain Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the timing chain and sprockets on 2005 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: You need the following tools to replace Timing Chain and sprockets: pulley puller (J8433), crankshaft sprocket remover (J41558), crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665) as well as crankshaft end protector (J41816-2). The tools required for this replacement work include pulley puller (J8433), crankshaft sprocket remover (J41558), crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665), and crankshaft end protector (J41816-2). The procedure starts with Oil Pump removal then moving on to camshaft sprocket bolts (206) and finally camshaft sprocket (205) and Timing Chain (208). Start by eliminating the bolts (231) and following this with the chain guide (232) removal. Using the pulley puller (J8433) and the crankshaft sprocket remover (J41558) and crankshaft end protector (J41816-2) remove the crankshaft sprocket and discard the crankshaft sprocket key if needed. The installation process requires evaluating the sprockets alongside the Timing Chain for cleanliness before their installation. Install the key into the crankshaft keyway then tap it gently (122) until both ends settle properly. Use crankshaft balancer and sprocket installer (J41665) to properly lock in place the crankshaft sprocket against the crankshaft flange when the sprocket key matches the sprocket keyway. Turn the crankshaft sprocket until a mark rests at the 12 o'clock position. Place the Timing Chain Guide (232) along with its bolts (231) onto position. Torque them to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) and verify that the bolt edges rest below the guide surface. Line up the camshaft sprocket with its locating pin while the sprocket teeth align with the Timing Chain; position the camshaft sprocket mark at the 6 o'clock position. Mount the camshaft sprocket (205) together with the Timing Chain (208). Adjust their positions until the timing marks match before tightening the sprocket bolts (206) to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). You need to verify that the camshaft and crankshaft sprocket timing marks (1, 2) are correctly aligned before reattaching the Oil Pump.
