2004 Chevrolet Corvette Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2004 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Engine assemblies must be removed first together with the Crankshaft balancer and oil level indicator tube and left and right exhaust manifolds as well as the Water Pump and Intake Manifold and coolant air bleed pipe. Subsequently the left and right valve Rocker Arm covers and valve rocker arms and push rods and left and right cylinder heads and valve lifters must also be removed. Start by removing all Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts while also taking out the front cover bolts. After removing these components you can discard the old gasket. Showcase the engine timing marks before removing the Camshaft sprocket bolts and Timing Chain from the sprocket. Place the dropped chain on top of the Crankshaft sprocket before you take off the Camshaft. The Camshaft and bearing inspection process starts by cleaning all parts but the rear cover can stay in place when Camshaft bearings remain in service. The procedure requires removal of three components: the Oil Pan-to-rear cover bolts followed by rear cover bolts and finally the rear cover and gasket for disposal. This operation may or may not require removal of Camshaft bearings. To install the rear cover, apply a 5 mm bead of gm U.S. P/N 12378190 equiped with 20 mm (0.8 inch) length sealant to the engine block and Oil Pan junction and use new gasket before tightening the rear cover and Oil Pan-to-rear cover bolts. Use the Crankshaft to bring opposite Flywheel bolt holes into alignment with the Oil Pan surface before inserting the alignment tool's tapered legs into the rear cover oil seal bore. Install j41476 bolts only until they reach a tight fit without overtightening. Tighten the Oil Pan-to-rear cover bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) and the engine rear cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) then j41476 should be removed. Begin your installation with a new Crankshaft rear oil seal and proceed to place the Camshaft in position with its sprocket alignment mark facing the 6 o'clock direction. Install the Camshaft sprocket and Timing Chain afterward before tightening the Camshaft sprocket bolts to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). Apply 5 mm of gm U.S. P/N 12378190 sealant or equivalent 20 mm long material to the engine block to Oil Pan junction before installing a new front cover and its corresponding gasket together with the front cover and Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts tightened gradually. Thread the j41476 and Crankshaft balancer bolt onto the front cover while aligning its tapered legs with machined surfaces. Secure the Crankshaft balancer bolt until snug before final tightening. After torquing the Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts and engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) remove the j41476. New Crankshaft front oil seals need installation before adding valve lifters and right and left cylinder heads as well as valve rocker arms and push rods and right and left valve Rocker Arm covers. Sequence the installation of coolant air bleed pipe then Intake Manifold and Water Pump and left and right exhaust manifolds and oil level indicator tube and Crankshaft balancer and the engine assembly.
