2003 Chevrolet Express 3500 Timing Cover Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2003 Chevrolet Express 3500?
A: Before fitting a new Timing Cover, the Water Pump must first be removed, then crankshaft balancer, oil pan-to-Timing Cover bolts, and Timing Cover bolts, which removed the old Timing Cover and gasket (old gasket thrown away). Clean and inspect the Timing Cover and make sure that the crankshaft front oil seal and Timing Cover gasket will not be used again, and the sealant on the Timing Cover gasket should not be applied unless it is necessary. During assembly, there must be no oil or foreign material on all gasket surfaces, and the crankshaft oil front seal must be in proper alignment, hence preventing early wear or oil leak. Use a 5 mm (0.20 inch) bead smear of the sealant gm U.S. P/N 12378190, or equivalent, onto the junction Oil Pan to engine block, then install the Timing Cover gasket and cover, followed by snugging the Timing Cover and Oil Pan-to-Timing Cover bolts without over-tightening. The location of the tapered legs should be aligned with machined alignment surfacing on the Timing Cover with the help of the front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476). Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt until it is snug, then tighten the Oil Pan bolts to Timing Cover and also Timing Cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Once you have eliminated j 41476, fit in a new crankshaft front oil seal and lastly re-install the Water Pump.
