2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should the Engine Control Module (PCM) be serviced to prevent damage and ensure proper installation on 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: Before working with the Engine Control Module (PCM) service the connector pins along with the soldered components on the circuit board should not get touched because electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage can occur. You must turn off your ignition completely before working on pcm connector installations and before disconnecting or reconnecting power from the pcm using the Battery Cable as well as jumper cables and the pcm pigtail and pcm Fuse to prevent internal damage. The service pcm receipt requires a transfer of broadcast code and production pcm number for label identification throughout its service lifespan yet does not involve recorded information on the pcm cover. Two options exist for servicing the pcm since practitioners must either implement a new unit or operate eeprom programming. Diagnostic testing will show whether the pcm requires replacement giving an opportunity to check that the replacement part matches the requirements. The service pcm will replace the faulty unit after removal. A service electrically erasable programmable read-only memory (EEPROM) received from the service department needs no programming while the storage location p0602 functions as an error indicator for unprogrammed or faulty eeprom. Start the removal by first disconnecting the negative Battery Cable then removal of the air cleaner housing cover assembly. First disconnect the air cleaner housing-based pcm connectors before pulling out the pcm assembly with its harness. Afterwards remove the pcm connectors. Install the pcm by attaching it to the connectors while tightening the connections to 8 n.m (71 lb in). Reinstall the pcm together with its harness inside the air cleaner housing before installing the air cleaner housing cover assembly and finally reconnecting the negative Battery Cable. Program the new pcm before its installation when a replacement is necessary.
