2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to inspect the steering column in accidents with frame damage or other significant issues on 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: All vehicles sustaining frame damage or major body or sheet metal damage or Steering Column impact or supplemental inflatable restraint system inflation need the Steering Column to undergo a full inspection. Begin the inspection by ensuring all brackets hold their caps tightly in place while testing capsule securement by hand operation to measure the bracket's tightness. Take note of how the bracket connects to the jacket assembly. Replace the bracket when both the securely seated capsules and bracket bolted to the jacket assembly are present. Use a new jacket assembly when both conditions exist: the capsules are not properly seated and the bracket uses welding to connect with the jacket assembly. Verify jacket assembly stability by measuring between the lower upper jacket edge to a designated lower jacket position. The jacket assembly needs replacement when its dimensional measurements exceed specifications. A visual inspection of the Steering Shaft must check for sheared injected plastic parts which require a new Steering Shaft installation. To detect frame damage that may result in a bent Steering Shaft measure the runout with a dial indicator at the shaft's bottom end where you rotate the steering wheel. The runout reading must stay below 1.60 mm (0.06 in). The Steering Shaft runout must be less than 1.60 mm (0.06 in) during measurement.
