2003 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Automatic Transmission Filter and Fluid on 2003 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The procedure starts with vehicle lifting and support before you place a drain pan under the transmission Oil Pan. The Drain Plug of the Oil Pan should be removed when present alongside any necessary removal of bolts to position the range selector cable bracket when lower the pan without severing the cable. First remove all Oil Pan bolts from the front and sides before loosening the rear bolts by four turns and using a rubber mallet to tap the pan gently for fluid drainage. Disassemble by first deleting the Oil Pan drain bolts as well as the Oil Pan and the gasket. Twist the filter while holding it firmly before removing the filter seal that might require pliers if it is difficult to remove. Check the fluid color and also examine the filter along with clutch material and bronze slivers and steel particles before discarding the seal. Work carefully to remove all remainders of old gasket material from the transmission case and Oil Pan gasket surfaces before cleaning them with solvent and allowing them to complete drying. Before mounting the plate into the transmission case use automatic transmission fluid for lubrication before inserting it with a socket of proper size. The new filter should be installed first with the Oil Pan reception of the new gasket. Tighten the Oil Pan bolts firstly from alternating directions to reach a torque range of 11 nm (97 inch lbs.). The range selector cable bracket requires reinstallation after which you should tighten the bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Use gm p/n 12346004 sealant on the Oil Pan Drain Plug threads before tightening it to 18 nm (13 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle until the fluid reaches the proper dexron iii transmission fluid level. Verify only cold level measurement at this time then inspect for any signs of oil leakage around the Oil Pan gasket.
