2003 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2003 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The replacement process for a Camshaft starts with air conditioning evacuation followed by draining the cooling system. Start the replacement process by removing the air cleaner housing assembly together with upper Radiator support and separating the electrical connections to the cooling fans. You must detach transmission cooler lines from Radiator while removing a/c line from condenser and by surge tank followed by disconnecting upper and lower Radiator hoses from Thermostat Housing and water pump outlet. The surge tank hose must be detached from the Radiator and the condenser/radiator/fan module should be removed as one piece. Proceed by taking away the Timing Chain and Camshaft sprocket before removing the valve lifters from both cylinder heads. The procedure starts with sensor bolt removal of the Camshaft sensor which follows with removal of the Camshaft retainer bolts together with the retainer. All Camshaft journals have the same diameter size therefore handle the components with care to avoid damaging the Camshaft bearings. Three m8-1.25 x 100 mm (M8-1.25 x 4.0 inch) bolts should be used to install into the front bolt holes of the Camshaft before rotating it gently using the bolts as a handle to extract the Camshaft from the engine block. Subsequently remove the bolts. The maintenance process requires both inspection and cleaning of the Camshaft with its bearings. Replacement of the Camshaft requires complete valve lifter replacement at the same time. Reapply the three bolts onto the front of the Camshaft before carefully inserting the Camshaft into the engine block with these bolts functioning as mounting tools. Afterwards, you should remove the bolts. To install the retainer plate mount the sealing gasket toward the engine block and verify that the gasket surface on the block has no debris. Fitting the Camshaft retainer requires installation of bolts before screwing them to 25 nm torque (18 ft lbs torque). Clean engine oil application on the Camshaft sensor o-ring seal for further inspection. If functional then attach the sensor with bolt installation while tightening to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Guide the installation of Timing Chain components and Camshaft sprocket after the valve lifters. The installation process includes reassembly of the condenser together with the Radiator/fan module and surge tank hose and upper and lower Radiator hoses and a/c lines and transmission cooler lines followed by electrical cooling fan connection and upper support and air cleaner housing assembly reinstall. Recharging the air conditioning system together with filling the cooling system completes the procedure.
