• Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2003 Chevrolet SSR?

  A: To change the engine front cover assemble the required instruments such as front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476). Start by taking out the Water Pump, crankshaft balancer, the bolts of the Oil Pan to front cover, and front cover bolts. Next, remove the front cover and gasket, throw out the old gasket, and clean and inspect the front cover of the engine. It is important not to reuse the crankshaft oil seal or front cover gasket and to do not apply any sealant on front cover gasket unless stated. Apply a 5 mm (0.20 inch) bead of sealant gm p/n 12378190, or equivalent, 20-mm (0.80 inch) in length to the Oil Pan to engine block junction, then install a new front cover gasket and cover. Tighten the front cover bolts and Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts by making sure they are nice and tight but watch out so as not to over tighten them. There is the j 41476 to align the front cover properly so that the crankshaft front oil seal is centered to avoid early wear and oil leaks. Wrap up the crankshaft balancer bolt, then apply Oil Pan to front cover bolts along with engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Lastly replace the j 41476 and place a new crankshaft front oil seal, and a new Water Pump.
