2004 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the engine front timing cover on 2004 Chevrolet SSR?
A: To change the engine front cover, one will need to have following: front and rear covers (J 41476). Start from taking out the Water Pump, then remove the crankshaft balancer, oil pan-to-front cover and front cover bolts. Next, it is advised to remove the front cover and gasket and get rid of the old gasket. Clean and inspect the engine front cover and make sure there are no leaks of oil and foreign material on the gasket surfaces. It is very important not to reuse the crankshaft oil seal or front cover gasket, as well as refraining from applying sealant to the front cover gasket if not required. Wipe away any runoff with a clean cloth and allow the above-mentioned material to cure for 15 minutes before applying the following step. Replace the new front cover gasket and the front cover, tighten the front cover bolts and Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts up snug, without over-tightening. They should be centered to the machined leg surfaces on the front cover using the front and rear cover alignment (J 41476). Tighten the Oil Pan to front cover bolts and the engine front cover bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs). Disconnecting the alignment tool, insert a new crankshaft front oil seal, and the Water Pump then.
