2004 Chevrolet SSR Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2004 Chevrolet SSR?
A: In order to replace the Camshaft, one needs to, first of all, evacuate the air conditioning system and to drain the cooling system. Take off the air cleaner housing assembly, upper Radiator support, and disconnect the electrical from the cooling fans. Unclip the transmission cooler hoses from the Radiator, disconnect the a/c hose from the condenser and near the surge tank, and pull off the bottom and top Radiator hoses from the Thermostat Housing and water pump outlet, respectively. Disconnect the surge tank hose from the Radiator and remove the condenser/radiator/fan module as an assembly. Next, remove the Timing Chain and Camshaft sprocket and then the valve lifters from both cylinder heads. Remove the bolt and sensor from the Camshaft then Camshaft retainer bolts and retainer. Take care as all Camshaft journals are of the same diameter not to damage the Camshaft bearings. Remove the Camshaft by using three m8-1.25 x 100mm (M8-1.25 x 4.0 in.) bolts to install in the front bolt holes of the Camshaft and use as a handle to pull the Camshaft from the engine block, when finished remove the bolts. Check and clean the Camshaft and bearings, then apply clean engine oil in Camshaft journals and bearings. Insert the three m8-1.25 x 100mm (M8-1.25 x 4.10 inch) in the front bolt holes of the Camshaft, and slowly install the Camshaft to the engine block using the bolts as a handle, and remove the bolts. Mount the retainer plate with the sealing gasket towards the engine block, making sure the gasket surface remains clean and free of junk. Install the Camshaft retainer and bolts, whereas you tighten to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs]). Check the Camshaft sensor o-ring seal for damage; if in good condition, lubricate it with clean engine oil and attach the Camshaft sensor and bolt, using a torque wrench on the bolt to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs). Go ahead and install the Timing Chain, and Camshaft sprocket, after that, install the valve lifters. Reassemble the condenser/radiator/fan module, surge tank hose, upper and lower Radiator hoses, a/c lines, and transmission lines, reconnect the electrical to the cooling fans, and replace the support and air cleaner housing assembly. Lastly, recharge the air conditioning system, and get the cooling system filled.
