2004 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on 2004 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The replacement process for crankshaft front oil seals requires one to remove the crankshaft balancer followed by removing the crankshaft oil seal from the front cover. Reusing the crankshaft oil seal along with oil application to its sealing surface must be avoided when replacing the front oil seal of the crankshaft. Start by applying clean engine oil on both the new oil seal outer edge and front cover oil seal bore. After lubricating the new crankshaft front oil seal you must install it on the Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer (J 41478) guide. The J41478 threaded rod piece combines its nut element, washer element and guide element with oil seal component before insertion into the crankshaft end. UDA and a wrench should be used jointly: clamp the hex on the installer bolt while turning the installer nut clockwise to embed the oil seal into the cover bore. Check the front cover bore for complete even installation of the J 41478 and remove it completely before inspection. Finally, reinstall the crankshaft balancer.
