2003 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2003 Chevrolet SSR?
A: Before you start the crankshaft rear oil seal replacement you need to first remove the engine Flywheel followed by removing the crankshaft rear oil seal from the rear cover. A crucial step is to remove the Flywheel spacer when possible since you should never lubricate the oil seal inside diameter nor the crankshaft surface because the crankshaft rear oil seal must be discarded for future use. Apply clean engine oil to both the new oil seal's outer diameter and the rear cover oil seal bore but do this without letting oil reach the seal surface. Install the j 41479 tapered cone together with nut bolts onto the crankshaft rear where you should avoid over-tightening the bolts. Apply the rear oil seal against the tapered cone before pushing it into the rear cover bore. Insert the j 41479 threaded rod into the tapered cone while moving it forward until the tool operates against the oil seal to achieve correct alignment. After installing the engine Flywheel you should rotate the tool handle clockwise until the rear cover bore contains the full seal depth. Remove the j 41479 tool and replace it with the engine Flywheel.
