2003 Chevrolet SSR Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2003 Chevrolet SSR?
A: To remove the Oil Pan, initially, remove the Starter motor and the crossmember brace, after that transmit cover bolt and cover. Drain the engine oil and take out to the engine Oil Filter, reinstall the Drain Plug and Oil Filter to tight. If the vehicle has a 4l60-e interchangeable, first remove the transmission bolt and stud on the right; and the lower bolt on the left side. Unplug oil level sensor electrical connector and pull out the engine harness from the front of the Oil Pan. Next, take out the bolts that secure the Oil Pan and remove the Oil Pan so that no foreign substance gets in the oil passages. Drill out the three Oil Pan Gasket retaining rivets if needed and take off the same gasket and discard it, as well as the rivets. Grease lines on engine Oil Pan walls and on bottom surface - remove. For installation, a 5mm (0.20") long line of gm u.s p/n 12378190, or a similar sealant should be applied to the engine block on the projections of the front and rear cover gaskets, which come into the Oil Pan surface. Fit the oil gallery passages and Oil Pan Gasket then pre-assemble the Oil Pan, gasket and bolts onto the engine block, which will require tightening until snug but again, it is not to be over-tightened. If the automatic transmission is 4l60-e, install the transmission bolt and stud on the right side, just easily, and then the bottom bolt on the left side. Properly tighten the Oil Pan and Oil Pan-to-Oil Pan-front cover to 25 nm (18ft. Lbs.), Oil Pan to rear cover to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.), and bellhousing,converter-cover and transmission bolts/stud to 50 nm (37ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the engine harness to the front part of the Oil Pan, connect the oil level sensor electrical connector, and install the transmission cover and bolt, and tighten the transmission cover bolt to 12nm (106 inch lbs),is to proceed to install the wheel speed sensors now. Finally, install the crossbar and its bolts tightening it to 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.), reinstall the Starter moter, and connect new engine oil and a new Oil Filter.
