2003 Chevrolet Tracker Steering Wheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering wheel and ensure proper alignment and safety on 2003 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The sir system needs disabling before you can begin the Steering Wheel replacement process. Before continuing with the work keep the front wheels facing straight ahead if the Steering Column will stay in place. Before installation start by removing both the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module and the Steering Shaft nut. Apply paint to mark matching points between the Steering Wheel and Steering Shaft which will guide assembly work. Exclusive use of the recommended tool called Steering Wheel puller (J1859-A) helps protect the sir coil assembly from damage. You need the Steering Wheel puller (J1859-A) to detach the Steering Wheel from the installation site. When Steering Column replacement is not necessary keep your front wheels pointed straight ahead before installing the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module. Check the stability of front wheels and tires before proceeding with installation when a new Steering Column has been installed. Position the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil at center when necessary and apply marks to a new Steering Wheel that match the same placement as the original wheel. First check that the two tabs on the sir coil fit properly into the two slots on the Steering Wheel mounting surface to avoid damage. Position the Steering Wheel onto the Steering Shaft and direct the two tabs on the inflatable restraint Steering Wheel module coil into the matching slots within the Steering Wheel base. Then verify alignment between marks on both components. The Steering Wheel needs to stay straight when both tires and wheels maintain proper alignment. Thread the Steering Shaft nut then apply 33 nm torque force (23.5 ft. Lbs.) to it. To complete the installation place the inflatable restraint part of the Steering Wheel module onto the wheel and activate the sir system.
