• Q: How to overhaul the brake master cylinder on 2003 Chevrolet Venture?

  A: Start Brake Master Cylinder overhauling by taking it out of the vehicle to work on the primary Piston's inner end. Before you take off the cap and diaphragm from the reservoir clean its outer surface. Also inspect the parts for damage and replacement if necessary. Sever the reservoir attachment point followed by using a tool to press the primary Piston down while removing its retainer and assembly from the cylinder. Apply low pressure filtered air to the front outlet opening first and then push the secondary Piston back along with the three seals and return spring through the other ports. Denatured alcohol cleans all parts of the master cylinder while we inspect the secondary Piston return spring for imperfections. If damage exists we need to replace the cylinder. Use filtered air to dry all components and apply delco supreme 11(R) brake fluid (GM P/N 12377967 or equal) from a sealed container on the master cylinder bore and secondary Piston construction parts. Put the lubricated primary seal and retainer on the secondary Piston along with a new secondary seal. Install the lubricated return spring and secondary Piston assembly into the cylinder bore, then put the lubricated new primary Piston assembly in place. Use a gentle tool to press down on the primary Piston and add the new retainer before putting back the brake fluid reservoir and its pieces, then reinstall the master cylinder into the vehicle.
