2003 GMC Envoy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rocker Shaft Spring Kit and valve stem oil seal on 2003 GMC Envoy?
A: The replacement process for valve stem oil seals and valve springs requires these necessary tools: valve stem seal remover and installer (J 38820) together with Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) and valve spring compressor (J 44228). The core toolbox for Valve Stem Oil Seal and valve spring replacement includes j 38820 valve stem seal remover and installer together with j 44222 Camshaft sprocket holding tool and j 44228 valve spring compressor. Start by taking out the cam cover with spark plugs then move onto exhaust and intake sprocket bolts. Insert the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) to the cylinder head for Timing Chain protection before tightening both horizontal bolts that secure the Camshaft sprockets to maintain chain tension. After using the Camshaft sprocket holding tool to hold the camshafts and Timing Chain properly, remove the Camshaft cap bolts then position the Camshaft caps on a rack for easy installation. Completely remove the Camshaft caps together with camshafts and use an appropriate adapter to apply compressed air into the cylinder. The valve spring compressor (J 44228) allows the user to compress the valve before removing its keys then the compressor itself. Use the valve stem seal remover and installer (J 38820) to remove seals after you remove the valve spring retainer and valve. The cylinder head must be cleaning thoroughly before its installation takes place. The valve stems require clean engine oil lubrication before installing the valve seals through the valve stem seal remover and installer (J 38820). Next, install valve springs along with the retainer. Use the valve spring compressor (J 44228) to compress valve springs before inserting valve keys and removing the compressor. After releasing air pressure from the cylinder head space apply clean engine oil to all Camshaft areas including journals, thrust face and lobes before putting the camshafts back into their original positions. The Camshaft caps need installation while cap bolts should be tightened until they reach 12 nm torque (106 inch lbs. Of torque). Put the Camshaft sprockets back onto their camshafts before removing the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222). First tighten the intake Camshaft sprocket bolt to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) before applying torque wrench (J 36660-A) for an additional 100° final pass. First tighten the exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt to 25 nm using the torque wrench (J 36660-A) before applying a second torque of 135° applying the same wrench. Put back the spark plugs before restoring the Camshaft cover.
