2003 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal on 2003 GMC Safari?
A: To replace the crankshaft rear oil seal, you will need to remove the Transmission Assembly and the engine Flywheel. Then, remove the crankshift rear oil seal from its housing using a properly fitting tool that you insert the notches of the access and pry them out. Remove the old seal and get rid of any dirt or rust around the area. Bore the crankshaft rear oil seal housing, the outside diameter of the engine Flywheel pilot flange as well as the outside diameter of the Flywheel locator pin as well as the Crankshaft Seal surface, and apply a small amount (2 to 3drops) of clean engine oil. Check the j 35621-b rear main seal installer (J 35621-B) flange for imperfections and remove any small ones (use fine grade emery cloth), do not allow any oil or lubes to touch the seal lip surface. Take off the sleeve from the rear oil seal of the crankshaft and add a little (about 2 to 3 drops) clean engine oil on the outside diameter of the seal. Install the crankshaft rear oil seal onto j 35621-b, and all the way onto the back of the crankshaft, and tighten the tool bolts by hand until tight. Proper alignment is critical; make sure the seal is almost flush and at a right angle to the housing. Turn the j 35621-b wing nut clockwise until it is engaged with the seal properly, and you feel that it is going down with increased resistance at the bottom of the housing bore. Remove the j 35621-b from the crankshaft by turning the wing nut anti-clockwise and release the tool. Wipe off any excess engine oil using a clean rag prior to reinstalling the engine Flywheel and the Transmission Assembly.
