2003 GMC Safari Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2003 GMC Safari?
A: Before replacing the park/neutral position switch maintain the parking brake activated while setting the transmission to neutral position. Repairs begin by lifting the vehicle before removing the nut that connects the transmission control lever to the manual shaft and next removing the transmission control lever. Start by disconnecting power cables from the switch then remove securing bolts which fasten the park/neutral position switch to the transmission structure before pulling the switch from the manual shaft. First test if the switch can be removed without force by filing the manual shaft's exterior rim to eliminate any surface irregularities. When installing the switch hub flats must align with manual shaft flats before sliding the switch onto the shaft until the mounting bracket touches the transmission bosses. An uninstalled new switch includes a positive assurance bracket that eliminates the need for the neutral position adjustment tool. Position the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) onto the switch with its slots matching the tool tabs. Install the switch to the transmission with two bolts left loose before coping the tool and positive assurance bracket. Twist the tool until the top locator pin finds its matching slot on the switch before tightening the bolts to 25 nm (18 lb.ft). After removing the tool, discard the positive assurance bracket if present. First reconnect the electrical wires to the switch after which you must reposition the transmission control lever with its installing nut before applying torque of up to 25 nm (18 lb.ft). Test the switch operation by lowering the vehicle while confirming it activates only in p (Park) or n (Neutral). Replace the switch when it fails to operate properly.
