Neutral Safety Switch

When replacing the park/neutral position switch always start by applying the parking brake shift the transmission into the neutral position. Support the vehicle while raising it and remove the nut holding the transmission control lever to manual shaft and detach the lever. Start by disconnecting the switch electrical connectors then remove all bolts holding the park/neutral position switch to the transmission before taking out the switch from the manual shaft. Put the tool aside then attach electrical wires to the switch before securing the transmission control lever with its nut to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Check the switch operation from a lowered position to make sure the engine starts only when the selector is placed in p (Park) or n (Neutral). Perform a new switch installation when the existing switch exhibits operational failures.

To change the park/neutral position switch of a 4l60-e transmission first engage the toothed part with the help of the parking brake and move the transmission to neutral. Lift the vehicle and unscrew the nut where the transmission control lever is fixed to the manual shaft and then remove the transmission control lever. The electrics are then disconnected from the switch and the bolts used to hold the switch holding the park/neutral position switch to the transmission are also unbolted drawing the switch from it out of the shaft. Fasten the switch on the transmission with two bolts finger-tight, then place the neutral position adjustment tool (J41364-A) on the switch making sure the slots are between the tabs on the tool. Turn the device until the upper locator pin lines up with the switch slot, and tighten the bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Take out the tool and if necessary remove the positive assurance bracket. Reattach the electrical connectors back and install the transmission control lever using the nut and tighten it using 25nom at 18ft. For lbs. Lower the vehicle down and test the switch for correct functioning and ensure that the engine does not start unless it is in p (Park) or n (Neutral); make sure to replace the switch if it fails to function properly.

To fix the transmission position switch/sensor on a 4l60-e automatic transmission, push down the parking brake and put the gearbox into neutral. Disconnect the negative Battery Cable, unscrew the nut that connects the transmission control lever to the manual shaft and remove the lever. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the park position switch, take out the two bolts holding the switch in place and remove the switch from the manual shaft. If the switch didn't fall off, slide the outer edge of the manual shaft across some sandpaper to take off any sharp edges. Apply 28 nm (21 ft. Lbs.) of torque to the switch bolts, take out your wrench and hook up the wires to the switch again. Place the transmission control lever onto the manual shaft and fasten it with the nut so that the tension is set to 28 nm (21 ft. Lbs.), lower the vehicle, reattach the negative Battery Cable and check that starting the engine is allowed only when the transmission is in either park or neutral position.

The tools and equipment needed to service and repair the transmission position switch/sensor include: neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A). Start by placing the parking brake and shifting the transmission in neutral. Pulled negative Battery Cable, removed nut from the end of the tranmission control lever to the manual shaft and removed lever. Next, you will disconnect the wiring harness connector from the park/ neutral position switch and remove the two bolts which hold the switch to the transmission after which you will be able to take off the switch on the manual shaft. For installation, place the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) on the park/neutral position switch where the two slots on the switch fall into the lower tabs of the tool. Twist the tool until the upper locator pin meets the slot on the top of the switch. When the switch does not come off the manual shaft, file the outer edge of the shaft removing any burrs. Mount the switch on the transmission manual shaft by placing into place according to the switch hub flats and the manual shaft flats, until the mounting bracket is in contact with the transmission mounting bosses. Install the switch to the transmission with the two bolts and tighten them to 28 nm (21 ft. Lbs.). Further, take off the neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A), connect the wiring harness connector back to the switch, and reinstall the transmission control lever to the manual shaft with the nut that should be tightened to 28 nm (21 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower down again, connect the negative Battery Cable and ensure the switch works as it should, and only the engine can start in the p (Park), n (Neutral).

The NV 4500 manual transmission back up lamp switch requires servicing by first raising the vehicle. Begin by disconnecting the back up lamp switch electrical connector before removing the back up lamp switch. Installation requires strict adherence to service precautions mentioned in the fastener notices. Fasten the back up lamp switch with 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) of torque and note that it arrives with thread sealant already applied to its threads. Once complete reconnect the back up lamp switch electrical connector then lower the vehicle.

Connect the transmission control lever to the manual shaft then tighten the nut using a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Drop down the vehicle and make sure the switch functions as needed, allowing the engine to start when set to p (Park) or n (Neutral).

Service and repair procedures for the transmission position switch/sensor require particular tools including a neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A). Neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A). Start by deploying the parking brake followed by shifting into the neutral gear. Torque). The final step is to finalize the vehicle drop then test the switch functionality to confirm engine start-up is limited to p (Park) and n (Neutral) settings. Move onto the park/neutral position switch adjustment if additional adjustments prove necessary.

To replace the park/neutral position switch of a 4l80-e/4l85-e transmission, first apply the park brake and put the gearshift in the neutral position. Lift the vehicle and remove the nut connecting the transmission control lever to the manual shaft and also remove the transmission control lever. However, pull the electrical connectors from the switch and remove the bolts holding park/neutral position switch to the transmission and then pullout the switch from the manual shaft. If the switch will not slide off with ease, file the outer edge of the manual shaft to ensure there are no burrs. In installing, line up the switch hub flats with the flats of the manual shaft and insert the switch on the manual shaft until the mounting bracket comes into contact with the bosses of mounting transmissions. As long as a new switch is being installed, it will have a positive assurance bracket as well, and therefore neutral position adjustment tool will not be required. Install the switch on to the transmission with only 2 bolts finger tight, and then with fitting the positions of the ingraining j 41364-a neutral position adjustment tool (J 41364-A) upon the switch; make certain that the given slot of the switch is placed so that it accepts alignment within the lower tabs of the tool. Swivel the tool for the upper locator pin to line up with the slot of the switch and then tighten the bolts that hold the switch in location to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Take off j 41364-a from the switch, and if it is applicable - take off the positive assurance bracket. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the switch and install the transmission control lever to the manual shaft using the nut and tightly fix it to 25 niger m (18 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle and check the switch for proper operations to ensure that the engine starts only when in p (Park) and n (Neutral). If it is not working properly, change out the switch.

In order to service and repair the back up lamp switch, raise first the vehicle. Disconnect the back up lamp switch's electrical connector and pull it out. In the installation of the back up lamp switch, it is anticipated that it has thread sealant pre-applied on threads and must be tightened to a torque of 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). After installation, plug the back up lamp switches electrical connector and lower the vehicle.

To change the park/neutral position switch, first put on a parking brake and shift the transmission in the neutral setting. Mount the switch on the transmission using two bolts finger tight and install the j 41364-aa position adjustment tool (J 41364-AA) on the switch so seats on the slots. Rotate the tool until the upper locator pin will line up with the slot with the switch then tighten the bolts to 25 nm(18ftlbs). Remove the j 41364-a from the switch and where applicable, remove the positive assurance bracket. Reconnect the electrical connectors to the switch, install the transmission control lever to the manual shaft with the nut, and tighten the control lever nut to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle and try the switch to determine whether it is working well, the engine should only start when the indicator's position is p (Park) or n (Neutral). If it does not work properly, change the switch.

First, raise and suitably support the vehicle.

Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector.

Connect the backup lamp switch electrical connector.

Install the nuts retaining the transmission shift control cable bracket to the transmission and tighten them to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.), reinstall the intermediate exhaust pipe, shift the transmission into PARK, and lower the vehicle.

Install the transmission range selector (shift) lever onto the manual shaft in an upright orientation.

Slide the switch off the manual shaft.

Valid combinations of switch signal circuits A, B, C, and Parity can be checked, where HI indicates an ignition voltage signal and LOW indicates a zero voltage signal.

Disconnect the electrical connectors from the switch and remove the bolts securing the switch to the transmission, then remove the switch from the manual shaft.

Install the switch with two bolts finger tight, then position the J41364-A Neutral Position Adjustment Tool onto the switch and align the slots with the tool's tabs.

Hold the lever with a wrench while tightening the nut to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.) and ensure not to drive the selector lever onto the selector shaft or use an impact wrench.

Disconnect the backup lamp switch electrical connector and remove the backup lamp switch.

Rotate the tool until the upper locator pin aligns with the slot on the switch, then tighten the bolts to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

Reconnect the electrical connectors to the switch, install the transmission control lever to the manual shaft with the nut, and tighten it to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).

Apply the parking brake and shift the transmission into neutral.

Ensure to follow the Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Ensure to install the backup lamp switch, which has pre-applied thread sealant on the threads, and tighten it to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).

Remove the nut securing the transmission control lever to the manual shaft, then take off the transmission control lever.

Disconnect it at a point near the vehicle harness to avoid breaking the park neutral position switch lead connector.

Apply the parking brake and shift the transmission into neutral.
