2002 GMC Safari Neutral Safety Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on 2002 GMC Safari?
A: Start by engaging the parking brake and placing the transmission into neutral position for replacing the park/neutral position switch. First raise the vehicle while you remove the nut holding the transmission control lever to the manual shaft before taking off the control lever. Detach electrical wires from the switch before unscrewing its mounting bolts which bind it to the transmission while you lift the switch off the manual shaft. The manual shaft's outer edge required filing to eliminate burrs if the switch didn't glide off easily. Insert the flat sides of the switch hub onto flat sides of the manual shaft before pushing the switch along the manual shaft until the bracket touches transmission bosses. A new switch includes a positive assurance bracket which eliminates the requirement to use the neutral position adjustment tool. Secure the transmission switch with two bolts just tight enough to hold position. Then install the j 41364-a neutral position adjustment tool onto the switch while making sure the slots match the tool's tab layout. The tool's upper locator pin should match the switch slot position before tightening bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Next remove the adjustment tool alongside any positive assurance bracket present. Follow by reattaching electrical connectors to the switch before you install the transmission control lever which should seat on the manual shaft using a nut tightened to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). To complete installation check the switch operations while lowering the vehicle by confirming it will start only when placed in p (Park) and n (Neutral). Performance information: change the switch when it fails to work properly.
