2004 Buick LeSabre Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the steering knuckle on 2004 Buick LeSabre?
A: In order to replace the Steering Knuckle you raise and support the vehicle, and remove the wheel and tire, then the wheel bearing/hub. Next, you will disconnect the retaining nut of the outer Tie Rod End and use universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) to remove the outer tie rod from the Steering Knuckle. The last step is to remove the bottom Ball Joint cotter pin and retaining nut, and then once again replace with universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) to isolate the lower Ball Joint from the Steering Knuckle. Move to eliminate the front strut (to steer knuckle) retaining bolts and nuts, and after that, provide the Steering Knuckle with the vehicle. For installation attach the Steering Knuckle to the lower Ball Joint to the lower Ball Joint retaining nut, and tighten it 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm) plus an additional of 180 degree, align the cotter pin without over penetrating two slots. Secure the Ball Joint nut for cotter pin leaning and do not forget to insert the cotter pin. Next, install the outer Tie Rod End to the Steering Knuckle and tighten according to the following methodology of 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) + 180 degrees. Mount the Steering Knuckle to the strut mounting bolts and nuts, and tighten them to 185 nm (136 ft.lbs.). Then, install the hub and bearing to Steering Knuckle/drive axle, then install the brake rotor. Please install the drive axle nut and avoid spinning the rotor by using a drift or screwdriver to tighten it to 160 nm (118ft. Lbs). Lastly, reinstall the tire and wheel, and then align the vehicle.
