2004 Buick Park Avenue Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter on 2004 Buick Park Avenue?
A: Raise and support the vehicle before placing a drain pan under the transaxle Oil Pan as a first step for automatic transmission fluid and filter service and repair. Carefully inspect the oil pan sealing surfaces before removing the bolts, as any scratches or damage could lead to oil leaks. Unscrew the Oil Pan bolts located on the front and side while partially loosening the rear bolts to a four-turn position. Use a rubber mallet to gently hit the Oil Pan which will create space for fluid to drain before you check the fluid color. After unscrewing all remaining bolts from the Oil Pan proceed to remove both the Oil Pan itself and its gasket. A long screwdriver should be used to push the oil filter neck beyond the seal after which inspectors must examine the oil filter seal for signs of damage or wear. To remove the seal the j 6125-1b (Slide Hammer) together with the j 23129 (Universal Seal Remover) might be required. Installing the seal requires application of j 36850 (Transmission Assembly Lubricant) or petroleum jelly to a new seal before its installation. The installation process requires a new filter to go into the case while knowing that Oil Pan gaskets can be used again unless the sealing surface reveals any damage. Install the Oil Pan together with the gasket at the same time followed by tightening the Oil Pan bolts to 14 nm (125 inch lbs.). Lower the vehicle before filling the transaxle to proper level and check the transmission fluid and inspect the Oil Pan Gasket for any signs of leakage.
