2004 Cadillac Seville Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the ignition lock cylinder on 2004 Cadillac Seville?
A: Beginning the Ignition Lock Cylinder replacement starts with disabling sir followed by parking brake application. The disconnect of the negative Battery Cable must occur before radio removal begins. Use the ignition key to insert it into the ignition cylinder. Start by breaking off or releasing broken keys or seized lock cylinders before removing the ignition lock bezel then knee bolster alongside disconnecting electrical connectors and fastener removal of the Ignition Switch from the instrument panel retainer. Use the radio opening to remove the Ignition Switch as you protect your work area with clean shop towels. Center punch the Ignition Switch housing about 3/8 inches from the key entry side on the rib. Then use a 1/8 inch drill bit to create a pilot hole for later access. A larger hole needs to be drilled using a 1/4 inch drill bit at the pilot location to break the release button retaining spring and extraction of the lock cylinder release button with a magnet. While using compressed air remove all plastic fragments resulting from drilling then extract the Ignition Lock Cylinder from the switch housing. A seized ignition cylinder combined with missing or broken keys requires replacement of both lock cylinder housing and lock cylinder bezel. Insert a small flat-bladed tool into the Ignition Lock Cylinder release button positioned below on the right side of the switch assembly then unlock it to pull out the lock cylinder. Pop the lock cylinder bezel tabs loose before extracting the bezel and light pipe from the cylinder to slip in the reader and exciter unit. The procedure includes connecting the ignition cylinder light pipe to its placement before installing the bezel piece. If the Ignition Lock Cylinder experienced previous seizing you should activate the run position before placing the Ignition Switch into the instrument panel while connecting all electrical connections and reinstalling the knee bolster. Use the run function on the new Ignition Lock Cylinder to push it into the Ignition Switch installation until completely set while possibly requiring gentle pressure on the release button. Insert the ignition key into the Ignition Lock Cylinder while the cylinder remains in run position and guide the key into the instrument panel opening until the lock cylinder release button creates an audible sound. Pull on the lock cylinder gently to make sure it engages before turning the ignition to lock and taking out your key. Return the radio to its place before you release the parking brake then reconnect the negative Battery Cable and double-check the ignition cylinder and switch and turn on the sir system.
