2004 Chevrolet Classic Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair the Automatic Transmission Filter on 2004 Chevrolet Classic?
A: Service or repair of the automatic transmission fluid filter requires vehicle suspension followed by supportive measures. A drain pan should be placed under the transaxle Oil Pan before the technician carefully removes Oil Pan bolts from both the front and sides while ensuring the sealing surfaces remain undamaged during the process. The rear Oil Pan bolts need to be loosed by four turns before using a rubber mallet or pry instrument to drain fluid. Inspection of the fluid color should occur before the removal of all remaining Oil Pan bolts and the Oil Pan which follows the Oil Pan Gasket. A long screwdriver serves to remove the oil filter neck from its seal before inspecting the oil filter seal for signs of damage or deterioration. The j 6125-1b (Slide Hammer) and j 23129 (Axle Boot Remover) can be used to remove the seal if required. Prior to placing the new seal apply j 36850 or petroleum jelly as coating material followed by installing a fresh filter in the case. The vehicle operator must put a new gasket on the Oil Pan while inspecting the Oil Pan for damages that might require replacement. Clean the Oil Pan and ensure full dryness before starting the installation process. Remove the Oil Pan bolts from the case and engage the new Oil Pan by proceeding to tighten all bolts to 10 nm (89 inch lbs.). Lower the vehicle and use dexron® iii fluid or equivalent to fill the transaxle to specifications before checking fluid level and inspecting the pan for any leaking.
