2004 Chevrolet Corvette Brake Pad Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake pads on 2004 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: To replace the front brake pads one should first check the fluid level in the break master cylinder reservoir, if it is half way between the maximum full point and the minimum allowed level then no fluid can be thrown off but if it is above then reduce to the half way mark. Lift and raise the vehicle and take out the tire and wheel assembly. Hand tighten a wheel lug nut onto a wheel stud to fasten the rotor to the hub. Apply a large c-clamp over the brake caliper with the ends against the rear of the caliper body and an old inboard Brake Pad or a wood block against the caliper pistons and tighten it enough to compress the pistons but they slide over the brake rotor. Remove the c-clamp, and then you release the upper brake caliper guide pin bolt, make sure you have kept the caliper safe with the help of heavy mechanic's wire so that the hydraulic flexible brake hose does not suffer. Pivot the caliper downwards and secure it out of site without detach the hose then remove the brake pads off and check the Brake Pad retainers. Examine the caliper slide boots to see if there is any damage, and replace if needed. Replace the large c-clamp to pressurize the caliper pistons completely and then take it out with the old Brake Pad or wood block. Mount the Brake Pad retainers and the new brake pads with the Brake Pad wear sensor in the trailing position under the forward rotation of the brake rotor. Raise the brake caliper up into the caliper bracket and install the upper brake caliper guide pin bolt, which should be tightened to the tune of 31 nm (23 ft. Lbs.). Refit the tyre and wheel assembly, bring the vehicle down and using the engine off, slowly push down the Brake Pedal till it is at 2/3 of its travel and then release it slowly. Perform this procedure up until you have a firm Brake Pedal, at which point the brake caliper pistons and pads will be fully seated. Lastly, top up the brake master cylinder tank to the correct level and burnish the pads and rotors.
