2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the automatic transmission shift cable on 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: The first step to substitute the automatic transmission range selector cable involves removing the air cleaner intake duct followed by detaching the cable from the wiring harness clip while also removing its cable retainer. The next step requires removal of the automatic transaxle range selector lever cable as well as its cable bracket. The removal of front floor console and pulling back carpeting becomes necessary because the cable requires access when floor console exists. First detach the cable retainer from the console shift control before removing the cable both from the control and its bracket. Remove the left knee bolster bracket before proceeding to disconnect the cable from the shift control lever. Move mechanics wire to pass the new cable into the cowl hole before removing the wire. Install the new cable to the shift control lever before putting back the left knee bolster bracket when working on a steering column shift control. The cable needs to be connected to both the console shift control bracket and the console shift control before installation of the cable retainer takes place. Reinstall both carpeting and front floor console while ensuring the cable moves according to the correct path. Begin by connecting the cable to the automatic transaxle range selector lever and the cable bracket and finally secure the cable retainer. Use the neutral position for the transaxle and shift control to join their cable ends through end fitting insertion until they snap securely. Use the adjuster clip to move the housing while guiding end fittings until complete clip depression locks the cable. Install the cable first followed by securing it to the wiring harness clip or strap or adjusting the cable after which re-install the air cleaner intake duct.
