2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End on 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: The first step to replace a Rack And Pinion outer Tie Rod End begins with vehicle raising and proper suspension. Start by removing the tire and wheel before removing the prevailing torque nut from the outer tie rod assembly while loosening the jam nut of the inner tie rod assembly. Steering linkage joints should not be removed as a wedge tool inserted between the parts will stop securing ring damage. The universal steering linkage puller (J 24319-B) should be used to separate the outer tie rod assembly from the Steering Knuckle after its removal from the Steering Knuckle. The next step involves disconnecting the outer tie rod assembly from the inner tie rod assembly . Install the outer tie rod assembly to the inner tie rod assembly while omitting jam nut tightening. After setting the outer tie rod assembly in position with the Steering Knuckle you can install the prevailing torque nut on the outer tie rod assembly before tightening it to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.) with an extra 120° rotation that displays 2 1/2 - 4 1/2 threads beyond the nylon washer. After the installation complete with the front end alignment you should lower the vehicle, reattach the tire and wheel assembly and tighten the jam nut to 70 nm (52 ft. Lbs.).
