2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: The procedure to replace an Oil Pan begins by supporting the vehicle then removing skid plate bolts together with optional skid plate. Begin replacing the Oil Pan by draining the oil while removing both the Drain Plug and Oil Filter followed by the crossmember bolts and bar and front Differential carrier and battery cable bracket bolts and Starter and transmission cover. The first step in this procedure requires detachment of the positive battery cable clip bolt along with separation of the oil level sensor electrical connector. Installing both clips allows transmission bolt removal. The oil level sensor gets discarded before you remove the Oil Pan bolts and nuts along with the Oil Pan and its gasket. After cleaning the Oil Pan check for any signs of damage. Apply gm p/n 12346141 (Canadian P/N 10953433) adhesive in a 0.197-inch wide (5 mm) and 1.0-inch long (25 mm) bead to both front cover-engine block junction and rear oil seal housing-engine block junction areas of the Oil Pan sealing surfaces. After applying new Oil Pan gaskets install them right away when the adhesive remains wet. The Oil Pan needs to sit exactly against the engine block rear surface or extend no further than 0.3 mm (0.011 inch) ahead of that point. Using a straight edge to guide placement, install all Oil Pan bolts and nuts loosely before inspecting Oil Pan-to-transmission housing clearance levels through feeler gauge measurement. Run the alignment process another time when the clearance measurement exceeds 0.3 mm (0.011 inch). After achieving the specified bolt torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) in the correct sequence, conduct another measurement of the Oil Pan-to-transmission housing clearance. Use a new Drain Plug o-ring seal by tightening it to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) before installing a new oil level sensor using 13 nm (115 inch lbs.) torque. After installing the transmission cover replace its bolts to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.) followed by torqueing manual or automatic transmission bolts to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Install the positive battery cable clip bolt then tighten it to 9 nm (80 inch lbs.) while reattaching the Starter and connecting the oil sensor electrical connector and securing each bolt to 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Reinstall the front Differential and crossmember then secure their mounting bolts at 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.). Lock down the skid plate bolts for the Oil Pan by using 20 nm torque settings (15 ft. Lbs.). Before installing the Oil Filter apply clean engine oil onto its gasket then install the filter and torque it to 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle afterward you will need to perform an engine oil fill-up with the recommended capacity and quality.
