2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the oil pan on 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: The procedure begins with vehicle lift support followed by skid plate bolt removal together with its plate when equipped. A complete oil drain occurs when technicians remove the Drain Plug and Oil Filter. The crossmember bolts and bar need to come off for 2wd vehicles. Next remove the differential carrier front component of 4wd vehicles as well. You must disconnect the oil level sensor electrical connector while removing the positive battery cable clip bolts and Starter and transmission cover and battery cable bracket bolts. Contrary to the non-reusable oil level sensor remove both the manual transmission bolts alongside automatic transmission bolts based on specifications. To perform the operation start by removing Oil Pan bolts together with nuts before extracting the Oil Pan while throwing out the gasket. You need to clean the Oil Pan while checking it for any required inspections. Both sides of the front cover to engine block junction and the rear oil seal housing to engine block junction require a 5 mm (0.197 inch) wide bead of adhesive gm p/n 12346141 (Canadian P/N 10953433) or equivalent that measures 25 mm (1.0 inch) in length. When installing the new Oil Pan Gasket make sure to do it immediately after the adhesive becomes moist. The Oil Pan should fit within 0.3 mm (0.011 inch) of the engine block's rear face. After aligning the Oil Pan against a straightedge position the bolts until they are tight enough and check the transmission housing clearance with a feeler gauge. A re-alignment of the Oil Pan must occur whenever its clearance exceeds 0.3 mm (0.011 inch). To finalize the Oil Pan installation apply 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque using the specified sequence. Recheck the clearance afterward. Use a new Drain Plug o-ring seal to install onto the Drain Plug and apply 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque. After installing a new oil level sensor and applying 13 nm (115 inch lbs.) torque, follow with transmission cover installation and bolt tightening at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Tighten all installation bolts for automatic and manual transmissions to 50 nm (37 foot pounds). Reinstall the positive battery cable clip bolt at 9 nm (80 inch lbs.) before the Starter and battery cable bracket bolts requiring a torque of 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). The crossmember installation for 2wd requires 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) torque while front differential carrier and crossmember installation for 4wd requires equal torque specifications. Bolt down the Oil Pan skid plate using 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) of torque if the vehicle has this component. The Oil Filter gasket needs cleaning engine oil for lubrication before you install the filter using a torque of 30 nm (22 ft. Lbs.). Lower the vehicle while filling the engine with the designated amount of both oil capacity and quality.
