2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the thermostat on a 4.3L engine on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: Start by draining the cooling system if you want to replace the 4.3l engine Thermostat. Loosen the air cleaner outlet duct clamp at the mass air flow/intake air temp (MAF/IAT sensor) and remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose and air cleaner adapter nut. Raise the air cleaner outlet duct until the hinge clip is freed up from the Throttle Body lip. Pivot the inlet hose clamp from the water outlet and pull off the inlet hose from the water outlet. Next, remove its water outlet studs and the water outlet itself, then the Thermostat. You need to clean the sealing surfaces of both the water outlet and the Intake Manifold, and throw out the o-ring seal. For installation, install a new o-ring seal onto the Thermostat, and then it, the water outlet. Mount the water outlet studs and lock them in position using tightening force in 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Replace the inlet hose to the water outlet and adjust the inlet hose clamp. With the Throttle Body lip in alignment with the hinge clip, rotate the air cleaner outlet duct down until its mounting stud is in the hole and the nut for the air cleaner adapter and the pcv hose would be installed. Tighten the air cleaner outlet duct clamp to the maf/iat sensor and fill cooling system and look for leaks.
