  A: The replacement of the 4.3l Water Pump requires these steps and the j 41240 fan clutch remover and installer tool (J 41240). Start by unclipping the air cleaner outlet duct at the mass airflow/intake air temperature sensor and disconnect the pcv hose plus air cleaner adapter nut. Turn the air cleaner outlet duct upward to lift it away from the Throttle Body. First empty the cooling system contents then take off the cooling fan and Drive Belt. Move the radiator outlet hose clamps from their positions on the surge tank and Water Pump before pulling the hose off both fittings. Detach both Water Pump inlet hose clamps to take off the inlet hose. Use the j 41240 tool to grasp the Water Pump Pulley before removing its bolts. Then take out the Water Pump bolts and the Water Pump while throwing away the old gaskets. Check and clean the Water Pump regularly according to service demands. Official gm sealant p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) should go on the Water Pump bolt threads before installing new gaskets and the Water Pump. After fixing Water Pump bolts at 45 nm (33 ft.lbs) press the j 41240 helper tool onto Water Pump Pulley to secure it before fastening the pulley bolts to 25 nm (18 ft.lbs). Align the upper clamp tang of the Water Pump inlet hose toward the front with its horizontal edge set to match the hose diameter before connecting the hose assembly. Reinstall the radiator outlet hose onto both the Water Pump and surge tank circuitries by adjusting their clamps. Place the Drive Belt and cooling fan correctly into position with the Throttle Body and connect the air cleaner outlet duct. Put on the air cleaner adapter nut and pcv hose before using maf/iat sensor bolts to lock the air cleaner outlet duct in position so you can then check for cooling system leaks after fluid addition.
