Water Pump

Before working on the Water Pump substitute check that engine temperature is cold to avoid burns and drain coolant from Radiator. First detach the air cleaner assembly plus the Mass Air Flow Sensor plus upper Fan Shroud. Start by removing the Drive Belt followed by both fan components including the Fan Blade clutch. To access the coolant pump you need to remove its bolted pulley and pulley components before disconnecting both the coolant bypass hose and clamps like the Radiator hoses. Disconnect the bolts from all four pump sides to extract the coolant pump with its gaskets by checking both surface areas for defects or burrs. Look at every part of the replacement equipment and put in new items when needed. Insert the coolant pump gaskets first and secure the pump through its four bolts while applying 45 nm of torque. Rejoin the coolant pump's bypass hose after you tighten its clamps while attaching the Radiator Hose back to the pump also. Put the pulley on the coolant pump then twist its bolts to 25 nm (18 ft.lb.) before placing back the fan and Fan Clutch assembly, putting on the Drive Belt, and securing the upper Fan Shroud with bolts. Connect the maf sensor and air cleaner assembly onto their places before filling the Radiator with coolant and turning on the engine. Once the engine hits normal temperature look for coolant escapes.

Being safe while working on the Water Pump means disconnecting the battery negative cable from the battery terminal first. First take off the air cleaner, let all engine coolant drain out then remove the air intake duct from the Throttle Body. Take out the coolant recovery reservoir while you remove both the upper Fan Shroud and the Fan Clutch segment. First disconnect the Drive Belt from its route on the pulleys. Then you should remove the bolts that secure the Water Pump Pulley to the Water Pump assembly. Remove all hoses attached to the Water Pump before taking out the Water Pump mounting bolts and the gasket with the pump. Check if the engine block and Water Pump bolts have damaged threads during restoration. Before installation insert the gaskets and Water Pump while applying gm p/n 12346004 (thread sealant) to the Water Pump mounting bolts. Tighten these bolts to 45 nm [33 ft. Lbs]. Plug in the Water Pump connections to the lower Radiator Hose, heater outlet hose, and by-pass hose before fastening its rotating component with 25 nm (18 ft lbs) torque. Place the Drive Belt first then add the Fan Clutch followed by upper Fan Shroud and finally install the coolant recovery reservoir air duct to Throttle Body and air cleaner assembly. Attach the battery negative terminal last while using proper testing tools to eliminate all air from the cooling system. Also test the system for any leaks afterward.

You would first drain the cooling system before replacing the Water Pump on a 4.3l engine. Start by relieving tension on the Water Pump Pulley bolts before you detach the cooling fan assembly with the clutch and the Drive Belt. Unbolt the Water Pump Pulley from its mounting position then remove both pieces. Unclamp the Radiator Hose from the Water Pump and remove it with the radiator outlet hose. After that, unscrew the Water Pump bolts and lift off the Water Pump. Clean the areas on both sides of the Water Pump gaskets before removing them. Install the Water Pump gaskets on the new Water Pump and set it onto the engine base. Apply thread-sealing compound gm p/n 12346004 on the bolts and fit the Water Pump mounting bolts. Torque them to 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Secure the radiator outlet hose to the Water Pump first before putting on the Water Pump Pulley and tightening its bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Drive the belt first then add the fan clutch assembly before filling the radiator cooling system with fluid and searching for leaks.

You must drain the cooling system first when replacing the Water Pump for 4.8l, 5.3l, and 6.0l engines. First take off the air filter setup along with both Fan Clutch and the Drive Belt. Shift the inlet hose clamp position to remove the inlet hose from the Water Pump's side also disconnect the outlet hose and heater inlet hose. Right after uninstalling Water Pump bolts put the Water Pump assembly and gaskets in the trash for disposal. Before putting in the new Water Pump place the gasket surfaces on proper oil-free surfaces during setup. Use a 15 nm torque wrench to tighten the Water Pump bolts and upgrade them to 30 nm torque. Secure the heater inlet hose with its clamp first before installing the outlet hose then heater inlet hose clamps. Install the accessory Drive Belt then put back the Fan Blade, clutch assembly, and air cleaner unit in place after filling the cooling system.

Before servicing or fixing the Water Pump, drain the Radiator of all its coolant. Subsequently, remove the upper Fan Shroud then take off the Drive Belt. After that, unfasten the fan, fan clutch and pulley from the coolant pump. Take out the heater hose, the Radiator outlet hose and the bypass hose from the coolant pump. Take out the Water Pump bolts, get the coolant pump from the engine block and clean both the matching areas on the coolant pump and engine block. Throughout installation, attach new gaskets and the Water Pump, then, place gm p/n 12346004 thread sealant on the Water Pump bolts and secure them to 41 nm. Attach the bypass hose and the heater hose to the coolant pump and then join the Radiator outlet hose as well. After the pulley, fan and Fan Clutch are installed on the coolant pump hub, put the Drive Belt and upper Fan Shroud in place. Once the engine is running, remove the Radiator Cap and wait until you can feel the upper Radiator Hose warm up which shows that the thermostat has opened. When the engine is idling, add coolant up to the level of the bottom of the filler neck, fit on the Radiator Cap and ensure the arrows on the cap fit next to the overflow tube. Lastly, take a look at the cooling system to check for leaks.

You must empty the cooling system first before loosening the Water Pump's pulley bolts so you can remove both the cooling fan assembly and clutch components plus the Drive Belt. You need to disconnect the Water Pump Pulley bolts to access both the bolts and the pulley. Unbolt and remove the Water Pump gaskets along with the Water Pump assembly from the engine by starting with your hand on the Water Pump outlet hose bolts and hose. Prepare the gasket surfaces by cleaning then apply new Water Pump gaskets and fix the Water Pump in place over the engine. Thread the mounting bolts through the new Water Pump before securing them with a sealant (GM P/N 12346004) and tightening them to 41 nm (30 ft.lbs.). Join the radiator outlet hose to the Water Pump unit before installing the Water Pump Pulley and tightening its bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Reassemble the Drive Belt but remember to install the fan clutch first then top up the radiator cooling system and look for fluid escapes.

A 4.3l engine Water Pump requires the use of j 41240 fan clutch remover and installer for replacement. First remove the air cleaner outlet clamp above the sensor before disconnecting the pcv hose and air cleaner adapter nut. Shift the outlet duct of the air cleaner upward to detach its connection to the Throttle Body. Remove all cooling fluid from the engine and disconnect both accessory components which are the cooling fan and Drive Belt. After moving the radiator outlet hose clamps away from the surge tank and Water Pump you can detach it from both components. Turn and loosen the Water Pump inlet hose clamps for install. After that take out the inlet hose. Secure the Water Pump Pulley with the fan clutch remover and installer (J 41240) and proceed by taking off the pulley bolts followed by the Water Pump bolts to remove the Water Pump. Take out the damaged gaskets from the Water Pump and inspect the pump parts for damage. Use gm p/n 12346004 material (Canadian P/N 10953480) as sealant when reusing old Water Pump bolts. The technician should place new gaskets on top of the Water Pump and put the Water Pump into place before tightening all bolts to 45nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Adopt the fan clutch remover and installer j 41240 to support the Water Pump Pulley during bolt installation at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Keep the hose clamp tangs facing forward from the Water Pump toward the inlet hose then position the clamp upper tang for matching with the hose outer diameter. Install the inlet hose and set its clamps. After placing radiator outlet hoses on the Water Pump and surge tank you should relocate their clamps into position. Fasten the cooling fan and Drive Belt while inserting the hinge clip into its lip on the Throttle Body to fit the air cleaner outlet duct. Rotate the duct downward until the mounting stud enters its hole. Fasten the air cleaner adapter nut and pcv hose while tightening the air cleaner outlet duct clamp at the maf/iat sensor to 4 nm (35 inch lbs.). Complete filling the cooling system and check for any fluid leaks.

When replacing the Water Pump (300) for lh6 ly2 ly5 and lmg engines you must first detach the air cleaner outlet duct and drain the cooling system. Reposition and unclamp the hose locking on the radiator vent inlet line at the coolant air bleed pipe connection point. You should move the clamp on the radiator inlet hose to expose it for hose removal from the Water Pump. Take the radiator inlets to the side before removing the accessory belt. Take off the radiator outlet hose from its Water Pump position and reposition the hose clamp. Adjust the clamp for the radiator surge tank outlet hose and disconnect the hose for service. Reverse the same steps after these areas are serviced. Shift the heater inlet hose clamp plus pull off the heater inlet hose until you can move it aside. Take off the Water Pump bolts (301) to extract the Water Pump (300) with its gaskets (309) and dispose of the gaskets. Before adding the new Water Pump install the device on only clean gasket surfaces. Fit the brand-new Water Pump assembly with the gaskets onto the engine block's surface and fasten the bolts (301) starting from a torque of 15 n.m (11 lb ft) and ending at 30 n.m (22 lb ft). Place back the heater inlet hose together with its clamp before reconnecting the radiator surge tank outlet hose and its clamp. Install the radiator outlet hose with its clamp followed by the accessory Drive Belt. Connect the hoses to their appropriate places according to their right positions, fix the radiator inlet hose to the Water Pump, and clamp it down. Join the radiator vent hose to the coolant air bleed pipe fitting by fitting the clamp on top. After filling the cooling system you need to put the air cleaner outlet duct back in place.

The cooling system requires draining before you can replace the auxiliary water pump. Move the crusher clamp from the front heater inlet hose before disconnecting it from the water pump. You need to loosen the rear heater inlet hose clamp before taking out the hose from the auxiliary water pump. Unplug the electrical cable from the auxiliary water pump and take out the heater outlet hose from its mount. Take out the auxiliary water pump from the vehicle by first removing its bracket nuts. Unclip the auxiliary water pump bracket parts to take out the water pump unit from this mounting point. Start with installing the auxiliary water pump onto the bracket before adding the clips to their respective positions. Put the auxiliary water pump back into its place on the vehicle and fit the nuts onto the water pump bracket before tightening them to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). Join the electrical connector to the auxiliary water pump while attaching the heater outlet hose to its appropriate clip. Position the rear heater inlet hose onto the auxiliary water pump before attaching its clamp. Position the front heater inlet hose on the pump assembly followed by installing its housing clamp before you add cooling system content.

You should start by emptying the cooling system before continuing with steps to replace a Water Pump on 4.3 l engines. Remove both Water Pump Pulley mounting bolts before taking off the pulley piece. Take off the Water Pump by loosening its mounting bolts while removing both the radiator outlet hose gasket and hose from the pump. Prepare the mating areas for new gaskets before you install and mount the Water Pump onto the engine. Use sealing product gm p/n 12346004 on bolt threads before installing the Water Pump mounting bolts at 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs. Torque). First secure the radiator outlet hose to the Water Pump before adding the Water Pump Pulley bolt and tighten its screws to 55 nm. Put back the Drive Belt then the fan clutch assembly before filling the radiator system and looking for potential leaks.

The first step to replace a Water Pump (LU3) in a 4.3l engine is to eliminate the air cleaner outlet duct and Drive Belt. Empty the cooling system through either the vac-n-fill process or the static fill technique. Change the radiator outlet hose clamps at the surge tank and Water Pump before taking the hose off its connections on both components. Shift in position the hose clamps on the Water Pump inlet and take off the inlet hose. Install the j 41240 fan clutch remover and installer tool to grip the Water Pump Pulley. After removing all the pulley bolts replace these with the Water Pump bolts. Finally take out the Water Pump assembly by using the tool. Take out the worn gaskets from the Water Pump and examine the pump for damages before installing new components. When using saved bolts apply gm 12346004 (Canadian 10953480) sealant or its equivalent on Water Pump bolt threads. Place fresh Water Pump gaskets and the pump into position before fixing the bolts to 45 n.m (33 lb ft). Use the j 41240 (J 41240) to hold the Water Pump Pulley while tightening its bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Set the Water Pump hose clamps with their forward-pointing tangs level with the Water Pump inlet hose diameter. Position the inlet hose clamps before putting in the Water Pump inlet hose. Place the radiator outlet hose back onto both the Water Pump and surge tank before repositioning its clamps. Attach the Drive Belt and the air cleaner outlet duct to the vehicle. Complete the cooling system setup by choosing between vac-n-fill method or static fill method before testing for any fluid loss.

Before servicing or fixing the Water Pump, drain the Radiator of all its coolant. Subsequently, remove the upper Fan Shroud then take off the Drive Belt. Once the engine is running, remove the Radiator Cap and wait until you can feel the upper Radiator Hose warm up which shows that the thermostat has opened. When the engine is idling, add coolant up to the level of the bottom of the filler neck, fit on the Radiator Cap and ensure the arrows on the cap fit next to the overflow tube. Lastly, take a look at the cooling system to check for leaks.

Before working on the Water Pump you need to remove existing gasket material from each part and wipe away all loose dirt from its housing. Check the Water Pump for damage on its sealing surface areas and gaskets. Also test its coolant passages for blockages and look for water outlet and rear cover leaks as well as pumping fluid at the Water Pump's vent opening. After that examine the Water Pump belt region for damage marks on its pulley.

Begin replacement of the Water Pump by disconnecting the battery negative cable before taking off the air cleaner assembly and draining the engine cooling system. Place the gasket and the water coolant pump over the bolts then apply teflon pipe sealant gm p/n 12346004 or equivalent as a sealant on each Water Pump mounting bolt. Tighten the bolts to a torque value of 42 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Connect the Water Pump, heater outlet, and radiator outlet hoses. Then put the Water Pump Pulley and its bolts in place and perform a torque of 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Put back the Drive Belt, fan clutch, upper Fan Shroud, coolant recovery reservoir, air intake system and air filter assembly. Close the process by hooking up the negative Battery Cable to its terminal connection. After filling the engine coolant system you need to remove air from it then check for any fluid leakage.

As a first step for replacing the Water Pump on a 4.3l engine you need to drain the cooling system and free the Water Pump Pulley bolts. Take off the cooling fan and clutch assembly then the Drive Belt. Detach all bolts from the Water Pump Pulley before removing the pulley and mounting bolts. Separate the Radiator outlet hose from the Water Pump by removing its clamps and bolts. Also detach the Water Pump outlet hose from its position before extracting the Water Pump using all mounting bolts. Start by taking off both Water Pump gaskets before cleaning the surfaces where the gaskets attached. Place new Water Pump gaskets on engine and fasten Water Pump in place using gm p/n 12346004 sealer on bolt threads. Adjust the Water Pump bolts to 41 nm and connect the Radiator outlet hose to the pump assembly. Fasten the Water Pump Pulley with 25 nm torque before installing the belt and fan clutch assembly. To complete installation add fluid to the Radiator and check for fluid leaks.

State the vehicle procedures to service the Water Pump by disconnecting the negative cable, removing the air cleaner, draining the cooling system, then detaching engine parts. Follow these steps to begin the service by taking out the air intake duct from the Throttle Body and then detaching the coolant recovery reservoir and upper Fan Shroud. Take off the Fan Clutch and Drive Belt components from their vehicle position. Unfasten the Water Pump Pulley bolts to pull off the pulley before disconnecting the radiator outlet hose, bypass hose, and heater outlet hose from the Water Pump. Pull out Water Pump bolts and extract all Water Pump parts with the gasket built-in. Check for surface damage on both engine block and Water Pump bolt areas before cleaning these surfaces. Install the gasket and water coolant pump but apply teflon pipe sealant gm p/n 12346004 or compatible product to the Water Pump mounting bolts first. Then fasten and torque the bolts to 42 nm (31 ft. Lbs.). Put the Water Pump mounting bolts through their bolt holes after reattaching the heater, by-pass, and radiator hoses to the Water Pump component. Then install the Water Pump Pulley and its bolts but tighten them up to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Connect these components to complete the assembly: Drive Belt, fan clutch, upper Fan Shroud, coolant tank and the air system parts. Rejoin the negative Battery Cable while adding coolant to the engine system and removing air from the coolant system before checking for any leakages.

Before handling the Water Pump start by letting the engine cool down first to prevent burns and then drain the coolant from the Radiator. Open up the engine compartment to remove the air cleaner assembly plus the maf sensor with both the upper Fan Shroud and Drive Belt. Additionally, disconnect the fan and Fan Blade clutch assembly. To access the coolant pump first unbolt and remove its pulley together with any attached hoses. Afterwards get rid of the coolant bypass clamps before detaching the Radiator outlet hose. Take out the coolant pump with four bolts after checking that both gasket mating surfaces are perfect and burr-free. Check all components and upgrade damaged parts when required. Secure the new gaskets to the bolt holes and fit the coolant pump in place by tightening four bolts to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Place the Radiator outlet hose back onto the coolant pump and fasten the clamps before attaching the coolant bypass hose to its connectors. Hang the coolant pump pulley onto its position and secure its bolts with 25 nm torque settings. Put back the fan parts properly by attaching both the fan and Fan Blade clutch unit but also the Drive Belt and upper Fan Shroud bolts. Complete the assembly with map sensor and air cleaner component installation. Check for leaks once the Radiator coolant has reached normal operating temperature and begin filling the Radiator system.

Begin by buying and using the fan clutch remover and installer tool designated j 41240. First disconnect the air cleaner outlet and the Drive Belt before draining the cooling system. Detach the outlet hose clamps from both surge tank and Water Pump then unsecure the hose from each unit. Change the Water Pump inlet hose clamps before uninstalling the inlet tube. Apply the fan clutch remover and installer part j 41240 on the Water Pump Pulley and remove all pulley bolts before using it again to detach the Water Pump bolts. Set aside the Water Pump unit. Clean the Water Pump thoroughly and check its condition before replacing the worn gaskets. Apply threaded sealant gm p/n 12346004 with equivalent compound to Water Pump bolt threads before installing new Water Pump gaskets and the Water Pump. With the specified tool you can install the Water Pump Pulley bolts to 25 n.m when holding the pump. Twist the Water Pump bolts to 45 n.m using the fan clutch remover and installer (J 41240). Fit the Water Pump hose clamp tangs to point forward towards the Water Pump, keeping the upper tang at Water Pump inlet hose outside diameter level. Place the Water Pump inlet hose and place its clamps before connecting the radiator outlet hose to both components. Reposition radiator outlet hose clamps before putting on the Drive Belt and air cleaner outlet duct. Check the cooling components and put fluid into the system before searching for any fluid drops.

Use a fan clutch remover and installer tool j 41240 as the basic equipment when installing a Water Pump on a 4.3l engine. Start the work by taking off the maf/iat sensor clamp from the air cleaner outlet and removing the pcv hose and air cleaner adapter nut. Rotate the air cleaner outlet duct in an upward direction to take it off the Throttle Body. Drain the cooling system first and then take off the Drive Belt before sliding the radiator outlet hose clamps between the surge tank and Water Pump. Move the hose to new positions on the surge tank and Water Pump before disconnecting the radiator outlet hose from both locations. Install the fan clutch remover (J 41240) tool onto the Water Pump Pulley to hold it in place during bolt removal of both pulley bolts and Water Pump bolts. This will allow you to extract the Water Pump from its position. Throw away the worn gaskets and check the Water Pump's condition before cleaning its parts. Put sealant gm 12346004 (Canadian 10953480) on Water Pump bolt threads and replace it with new Water Pump gaskets before setting the Water Pump in position. Mount the Water Pump Pulley using the fan clutch remover and installer j 41240 then tighten pulley bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs). Correctly position the hose clamp tangs at the Water Pump end with forward pointing tangs and upper tang level before putting on the inlet hose and clamping it in place. Connect the radiator outlet hose to both the Water Pump and surge tank before adjusting their clamps into place. Place the Drive Belt over the parts and shift the air cleaner outlet duct down until the mounting stud enters its designated hole. Secure the air cleaner adapter nut first then attach the pcv hose before tightening the outlet duct clamp at the maf/iat sensor to a torque of 4 nm. Complete the cooling system with fluid before searching for any fluid losses.

You first need to drain the cooling system before starting work on 4.8l, 5.3l, and 6.0l engine Water Pump replacements. You can remove the air cleaner outlet duct by loosening the clamps around Throttle Body and maf/iat sensor. Take out the outlet duct through the hose connector. You can take down the engine sight shield and radiator vent hose from their clips on the radiator hose if necessary. First move the inlet hose clamp at the Water Pump before taking out the inlet hose then Fan Blade and accessory Drive Belt. Unclip the outlet hose barrel then take off the outlet hose plus surge tank outlet hose and heater inlet hose from the Water Pump. You need to remove Water Pump bolts and put out all components including gaskets while discarding old gaskets. Before putting in the Water Pump you should clean any oil residue from its gasket surfaces. Put new gaskets on the Water Pump and place the correct fasteners properly while keeping all fasteners free of paint or lubricant. Start by tightening the Water Pump bolts to 15 nm (11 ft lbs.) then continue to 30 nm (22 ft lbs.). Put back the heater inlet hose and its clamp then attach both surge tank outlet and outlet hoses with their seals. Install the accessory Drive Belt and Fan Blade. Place the inlet hose and its clamp at the engine vent inlet hose before connecting it to the radiator hose holders. Reinstall the engine sight shield by aligning the arrow on the Throttle Body end of the duct with the Throttle Body stud before connecting the air cleaner outlet duct. After mounting the hose clips secure the radiator inlet hose to its exit duct and tighten the air cleaner outlet clamps at Throttle Body and maf/iat sensor with 4 nm (35 inch lbs.) torque.

The cooling fan and the drive belt.

Ensure the hose clamp tangs point forward, with the upper tang level with the outside diameter of the inlet hose.

Fill the cooling system and inspect for leaks.

Position the inlet hose clamps.

Install the coolant pump and secure it with four bolts tightened to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.).

Reinstall the accessory drive belt, fan blade and clutch assembly, and air cleaner assembly.

Install the water pump with NEW gaskets and secure it with the water pump bolts, tightening them first to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.) and then to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

Place the radiator outlet hose clamp loosely on the end of the hose and install the upper radiator hose.

Place the new coolant pump gaskets and install the coolant pump, securing it with four bolts tightened to 45 Nm (33 ft. lbs.). Reconnect the coolant bypass hose and clamps, then attach the radiator outlet hose to the coolant pump.

Ensure all gasket surfaces are free of oil or foreign material.

Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480).
