2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 Brake Calipers Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake calipers on the 2500/3500 Series on 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500?
A: Examining brake fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir should become the first step for replacing a rear brake caliper on 2500/3500 series vehicles. Check the brake master cylinder fluid level and remove fluid until the midpoint between full capacity and limit stands at that level. Lift and support the vehicle before you take out the tire assembly with the wheel. An operation check of the caliper should be performed prior to using a c-clamp that pushes pistons into caliper bores until removal of both pad and caliper is achievable. The brake hose end should receive cleaning while a rubber cap or plug must be installed to block fluid loss and contamination of the exposed brake pipe. Take away the brake hose to caliper bolt as well as your brake hose and throw out the two copper brake hose gaskets. Maintain the brake caliper mounting bolts in position while removing the brake caliper mounting bracket bolts. Never push down the brake pedal when rotors/calipers or drums are detached from the system to minimize damage. Separate the brake caliper along with its mounting bracket then detach the caliper from this component. Examine the caliper assembly before removing brake pads along with anti-rattle clips from the mounting bracket. Check for any cracks or damage on the mounting bracket and replace it if necessary after inspecting bushings for wear. To replace or install bushings use a flat-bladed tool and a socket. After attaching the brake pads together with anti-rattle clips to the mounting bracket install the brake caliper. First clean all mounting bolt threads with brake parts cleaner before applying threadlocker gm p/n 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) and then install the brake caliper mounting bolts without final tightening. First connect the brake caliper to its mounting bracket before tightening both mounting bracket bolts to 300 nm (221 ft. Lbs.) torque. Apply 300 nm (221 ft. Lbs.) torque when fastening the mounting bracket bolts then use 108 nm (80 ft. Lbs.) when tightening the caliper mounting bolts. Before reattaching the brake hose you must remove its rubber cap or plug and fit two copper brake hose gaskets before torquing the bolt to 40 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Complete the brake fluid bleed procedure afterward replace the tire assembly and wheel then drop the vehicle while maintaining proper brake fluid levels in the master cylinder reservoir with clean fluid.
