2004 Chevrolet SSR Axle Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear axle shaft on 2004 Chevrolet SSR?
A: The replacement of rear Axle Shaft begins by lifting your vehicle and eliminating the tire and wheel assembly together with the brake caliper. The first step requires removal of the rear axle housing cover along with its gasket before extracting the thrust block lock bolt and thrust block. When pushing the flange of the Axle Shaft towards the Differential assembly avoid shaft rotations because this may lead to gear misalignment which makes thrust block installation more difficult. Before installing the new Axle Shaft in the Differential assembly keep the shaft in a non-rotational position while protecting the Axle Shaft seal from all damage. Insert the Axle Shaft into place until you can see both its splines with the Differential gears and the groove at the Axle Shaft location. At this point, apply the c-lock to the button end before pulling out the Axle Shaft flange which will press the c-lock into the Differential side gear. Position the thrust block and install a new threaded by installing the thrust lock bolt until it reaches 36 nm (27 ft. Lbs.). Install the brake caliper and tire and wheel assembly after replacing the rear axle housing cover and its gasket. To finish the procedure you should lower the vehicle after adding proper axle lubricant into the rear axle.
