  • Q: How to replace the muffler on 2004 Chevrolet SSR?
    A: To replace the Muffler, first lift the car. Take out the retaining nuts on the Catalytic Converter flange, and disconnect the rear exhaust from the left adjustable hanger and the right rear adjustable hanger nuts. Next, come loose the rear axle Tie Rod and axle brace from the rear axle, the bolt that holds the right rear brake hose, and the bolt for the right rear park brake cable to the frame. Take out the right rear stabilizer bar link first and remove the frame brace by the gas tank. Before lowering the axle for clearance for the exhaust, support the rear axle with a suitable jack and remove the right rear lower shock bolt. Release the right rear spring and the rear exhaust system from the insulators and remembering to rotate the rear exhaust system out of doors. With assistance, remove the rear exhaust system out of the vehicle. For installation, with assistance, position rear exhaust system and attach to the insulators. Reinstall the right rear spring and lift the rear axle. The right rear lower shock bolt should be installed and tightened to 80 nm (59 ft bolts). Take off the jack that is supporting the rear axle, then install the right rear stabilizer link and frame brace by the gas tank. The right rear park brake cable should then be secured to frame with a bolt tightened to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) after which the bolt used for the right rear brake hose should also be tightened to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). Reconnect the rear axle Tie Rod, and the rear axle brace and install the rear exhaust to the left adjustable hanger. Tighten the right exhaust hanger with nuts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) and the nuts on the Catalytic Converter flange to 45 nm (33 ft. Lbs.). Finally change the exhaust if necessary and lower the vehicle.
