2004 Chevrolet Tracker Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear axle shaft on 2004 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The first step to replace a rear Axle Shaft involves lifting and stabilizing your vehicle and placing a drain pan underneath the rear axle housing. Drain the oil by extracting both the filler plug and Drain Plug from their positions. Start the procedure by taking away the tire wheel assembly and subsequent Brake Drum. To begin separate the 4 nuts (4,6) at the bearing retainer studs then if equipped with abs disconnect the Wheel Speed Sensor . Begin by placing the Axle Shaft remover (J 45103) onto 2 wheel studs and then install the wheel hub remover (J 34866) along with its 2 wheel nuts to the Axle Shaft remover. Apply a delicate touch to the slide hammer (J 2619-01) when functioning it with the wheel hub remover. When working on a vehicle with abs it is necessary to grind down 2 opposite sides of the abs reluctor wheel and the rear Axle Shaft bearing retainer ring. A hammer along with a cold chisel will help eliminate both the abs reluctor wheel and the rear Axle Shaft bearing retainer ring. The split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-01) with hydraulic press installation should extract the rear Axle Shaft bearing from the rear Axle Shaft by placing the puller between bearing and retainer. Take the seal out of the retainer before you use the ball joint remover (J 43631) or hydraulic press to unscrew the 5 wheel studs from the axle flange. The installation of the rear Axle Shaft bearing onto the rear Axle Shaft should be done using the split-plate bearing puller (J 22912-01) alongside a hydraulic press that positions the concave side away from the bearing. You must install the rear abs reluctor wheel into the bearing if the system exists followed by the same puller method to mount the rear Axle Shaft bearing retainer ring. The rear Axle Shaft inner oil seal should get inspected for damage and must be replaced when needed before applying gm p/n 1051344 Wheel Bearing lubricant (Canadian P/N 993037) to the seal lip. Place general motors sealer gm p/n 1052366 on the Brake Backing Plate retainer ring surface before using a wheel stud to line up with the flange hole and fastening with a wheel nut and washer. Use a ruler to check the left rear Axle Shaft measures 711.5 mm as well as the right rear Axle Shaft measures 757 mm for accurate installation. Secure the rear Axle Shaft with its bearing inside the housing as the bearing faces downward. Tighten the four nuts stamped (4, 6) on retainer studs to 23 nm (17 ft. Lbs.). The Brake Drum along with the Wheel Speed Sensor must be installed before reattaching the rear tire and wheel assembly. Following Drain Plug thread application of teflon pipe sealant, gm p/n 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480), install it with proper torque at 25 nm or 18.4 ft-lbs. Finally, add approximately 2.2 liters (4.6 pints) of 80w-90 gl5 lubricant, gm p/n 12345977 (Canadian P/N 10953482), to reach the fill plug hole level. You must finish the procedure by fitting the filler plug which requires tightening to 43 nm or 31.7 ft. Lbs. Afterward remove the drain pan and slowly lower the vehicle.
