2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the upper intermediate steering shaft on 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: Start by making sure front wheels maintain straight alignment and locking the Steering Column before moving on. After you turn off the ignition and remove the key you should utilize the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) to lock down the column. The knee bolster must be removed first before disconnecting the upper intermediate shaft boot from the lower intermediate shaft boot to reach the pinch bolt securing the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft. Remove the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt to enable disconnecting the intermediate shaft above from the shaft below. Keep track of the pinch bolt's original direction for restoration hinges. Remove the first bolt that connects the upper intermediate shaft to Steering Column then disconnect this shaft from its column position before extracting it from your car. Reinstall the upper intermediate shaft into the vehicle so it connects with the Steering Column but install the pinch bolt in the same direction it was removed to prevent contact with the Steering Column housing. After installing the upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt to the Steering Column, tighten it to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Next, attach and secure the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft by tightening the pinch bolt to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Safeguard the interface by fully enclosing the white lower intermediate shaft boot insert with the upper intermediate shaft boot then connect the two boots together before reinstalling the knee bolster. Users must disassemble the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) to complete the unlocking process of the Steering Column.
