2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer Steering Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the upper intermediate steering shaft on 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: There must be a sequence of steps before upper intermediate Steering Shaft changes start including straightening front wheels and locking the Steering Column because this prevents restraint systems coil assembly damage from component misalignment. Turn the ignition into the lock position then remove the key before beginning. You can use the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) to lock the Steering Column inside the opening of the lower trim cover. Start by taking out the air outlet duct then unfasten the upper intermediate shaft boot from the lower intermediate shaft boot to reach the upper to lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Good practice involves removing the upper intermediate shaft to lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt followed by disconnecting the shafts while documenting the upper shaft alignment to the Steering Column pinch bolt position for reinstallation. Disassembling the upper intermediate shaft requires first disconnecting the upper intermediate shaft from Steering Column and both the upper intermediate shaft to Steering Column pinch bolt removal prior to upper intermediate shaft removal from the vehicle. Place the upper intermediate shaft inside the vehicle before Steering Column connection and position the pinch bolt precisely as before removal to prevent Steering Column housing contact. Tighten the upper intermediate shaft to the Steering Column pinch bolt nut to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.) before attaching the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft and installing the pinch bolt between them at the same torque. Complete the upper intermediate shaft boot so its edge uses the white insert of the lower intermediate shaft boot to create a proper seal followed by resuming the upper boot's connection to the lower boot and air duct installation and finally disengage the column's lock with pin j42640.
