2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Replace the Rack and Pinion Inner Tie Rod on 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer?
A: Starting the Rack And Pinion inner tie rod (Quiet Valve) replacement requires boot removal followed by Rack And Pinion vise fixation. The Rack And Pinion preload adjustment requires attention only after inner tie rod detachment from the Rack And Pinion to prevent damage to both components. The inner tie rod assembly requires its shock dampener to be taken off while the rack receives the dampener back on. Use a pipe wrench on the rack adjacent to the inner tie rod housing to rotate it counterclockwise until separation happens between rack and housing. The technician performs this procedure again for both the inner tie rod housing and inner tie rod by eliminating existing loctite(R) residue from the threads on the inner tie rod and rack. Put the shock dampener on the rack then make sure thread surfaces remain clean before applying loctite(R) 262 (or equivalent matching product) to the inner tie rod threads if needed. Drill an inner tie rod into the rack using a pipe wrench along with torque wrench j34028 to achieve 100 nm (74 ft. Lbs.) of tie rod tightness. The same procedure should be applied to the inner tie rod assembly then check for correct stake connection between the inner tie rod assembly housing and male rack if necessary. A 0.25 mm gauge must check both stakes to determine if they allow a 0.25 mm opening between the rack and housing stake. The shock dampener should slide over the inner tie rod housing for proper seat placement before you assemble the Rack and Pinion Boot.
