• Q: How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on 2004 GMC Envoy?

  A: When replacing the outer wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal use J 35910 Drive Axle Seal Clamp Plier (J 35910) combined with J 8059 Snap Ring Pliers (J 8059). Before beginning start by removing the inner seal but maintain careful handling of the outer race throughout the manual grinding process. Proceed to cut the large retaining clamp at the CN joint and throw it away before cutting and discarding the small clamp on the outer seal's small end. To proceed with CN joint cleaning remove the outer seal and dispose of it. Use pre-provided grease to fill the CN joint assembly and install the new small retaining clamp onto the outer seal before putting on the new large retaining clamp. Secure the small retaining clamp to the outer seal by fitting the small end into the driveshaft bar CN joint outer seal groove then using the J 35910 (or equivalent) tool set with a breaker bar and torque wrench to reach 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.) torque. Place the large diameter of the outer seal in position while holding the large retaining ring along the outside edge of the CN joint making sure the outer seal lip enters the CN joint groove. Similar to the previous step, manipulate the outer seal while removing any air trapped inside, then tighten the large retaining clamp onto the CN joint housing with the J 35910 (or equivalent tool) and a breaker bar followed by a torque wrench set to 176 Nm (130 ft. lbs.). Before inward seal installation check the clamp ear dimension then angulate the CN joint multiple times for grease dispersal.
