- Q: What tools are needed to service and repair the rear inner CV Boot and seal on 2005 Buick Rendezvous?A: The following tools serve essential functions during constant velocity joint boot maintenance and trimming for rear wheel drive shaft inner joints and seals: Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) alongside Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). Technicians need Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) in combination with Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers (J 42572). Use side cutters to remove the small seal clamp on the wheel drive shaft bar prior to discarding it while you carefully detach the large seal clamp from the tripot joint without damaging the tri-lobal tripot bushing. Pull the inboard seal away from the tripot bushing as you move it along the wheel drive shaft bar. The housing and spider from the tripot joint and wheel drive shaft bar need removal along with the guide and spring from the tripot housing before marking the correct position on the wheel drive shaft bar. A mark on the wheel drive shaft bar helps maintain proper 60-degree offset positioning when reassembling this component. You should use a brass drift tool alongside a hammer to flatten and remove the barrel retaining ring before stemming out the tripot spider which requires disposal of the retaining ring and joint seal. Check the inboard seal alongside the tripot joint spider assembly and housing and tri-lobal tripot bushing to detect damage or wear. After placing a new small seal clamp over the joint seal slide it into position on wheel drive shaft bar at the designated groove. Use Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers Model J 42572 to crimp the small seal retaining clamp to a torque of 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Insert a fresh retaining ring barrel into the assembly point while the reference indicator faces the tripot spider. Put the tripot spider into position while compressing the barrel retaining ring to verify proper engagement takes place. Place service kit grease into the inboard seal before housing repacking. Make sure the tri-lobal tripot bushing sits without protrusion on the housing face. The spring and guide need installation by applying grease for retention before placing the tri-lobal tripot bushing. According to the installation specifications place the large new seal retaining clamp onto the inboard seal and move the housing toward the tripot joint spider assembly. Check for seal deformation before you straighten it out and align all components during latching. After latching the large seal retaining clamp using Drive Axle Seal Clamp Pliers (J 35566) you should rotate the inner tripot housing multiple times to achieve grease distribution throughout the bearings.
