2006 Buick Rendezvous Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to service and repair the front inner CV Boot for the drive shaft joint and seal replacement on 2006 Buick Rendezvous?
A: The following set of tools serves requirements for servicing the front wheel drive shaft inner joint and seal replacement of the Constant Velocity Joint Boot: You will need J 42572 Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers for this job. J 42572 Drive Shaft Seal Clamp Pliers. First use side cutters to remove the small seal clamp from the wheel drive shaft bar before discarding it. When using side cutters to extract the large seal clamp from the tripot joint do not cut into the wheel drive shaft tri-lobal tripot bushing. When replacing the wheel drive shaft inboard seal, separate it from the tri-lobal tripot bushing while moving the seal down the wheel drive shaft bar. Extract the housing components from both the wheel drive shaft bar and the tripot joint spider structure. Slow brass drift hammering should compress the wheel drive shaft bar's barrel retaining ring before removing the tripot spider along with discarding the ring. Examine the wheel drive shaft inboard seal and tripot joint spider assembly and housing and tri-lobal tripot bushing after removing the seal and bar from both components for signs of damage or wear. To assemble the wheel drive shaft bar combine the new small seal clamp with the small end of the joint seal fix them onto the wheel drive shaft bar so that the small end enters the joint seal groove. Use the J 42572 to crimp the small seal retaining clamp then tighten it to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). Position the wheel drive shaft bar barrel retaining ring using the correct angle of the tripot spider's beveled edge before wheel shaft reassembly. The tripot spider installation requires a flat-bladed tool for barrel retaining ring compression to check proper wheel drive shaft bar engagement through tripot spider free recovery testing. Add ½ of the grease service-kit amount to the wheel drive shaft inboard seal before distributing the rest inside the housing. Position the flush tri-lobal tripot bushing to the housing front. Mount the tri-lobal tripot bushing inside the housing before putting on the bigger new seal retaining clamp to the wheel drive shaft inboard seal. Install the housing onto the wheel drive shaft bar followed by the large wheel drive shaft inboard seal with the large clamp positioned around the tri-lobal tripot bushing until the seal lip rests in the correct groove. Check the seal for dimples or stretch marks or deformations before proceeding with adjustments as needed. Position the joint assembly to its correct vehicle space before aligning wheel drive shaft inboard seal with tripot housing and large seal retaining clamp for compression of the retaining clamp. Crimp and tighten the large seal retaining clamp using the J 42572 tool to 136 Nm (100 ft. lbs.). The inner tripot housing needs 4 to 5 rotations to spread the grease evenly into the tripot spider bearings.
