• Q: How to replace the LH Differential Cover and seal on 2005 Cadillac XLR?

  A: To change the Differential carrier cover and seal of the left side, first lift the vehicle and properly prop it up. Take off the lh rear tire and the wheel assembly, the lh wheel drive shaft, and the lh Muffler assembly. Drain the fluid from Differential, then suspend Differential and remove left Differential mount. Clean around the Differential cover of any dirt or debris and remove the two bolts which secure the Differential cover and push out the dowel pin. Carefully remove the Differential cover without loosing the magnet found at the bottom of Differential case. Remove the o-ring seal and the axle seal on Differential side cover. Clean the o-ring sealing surface on the Differential cover and on the Differential housing, and suffix a new o-ring seal to the Differential cover. Reinstall Differential cover, dowel pin and two retaining bolts tightening them to 28 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). After that, the bolt holding the left Differential mount needs to be tightened to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Before installing the axle seal in the Differential cover, use j 46405 output shaft seal installer to do the job. Add the correct fluids into the Differential until it reaches the proper level and reinstall the lh Muffler assembly and the lh wheel drive shaft, as well as the lh rear tire and wheel assembly before lowering the vehicle.
