2005 Chevrolet Cavalier Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What tools are required to replace the rack and pinion boot and breather tube on 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier?
A: Performing Rack and Pinion Boot and breather tube replacement requires a tool kit containing one service boot clamp installer (J 22610). Start the procedure by removing the outer tie rod before disassembly of the hexagon jam nut which secures the inner tie rod assembly. After detaching the tie rod end clamp from the Rack and Pinion Boot start cutting the boot clamp with side cutters before throwing it away. Extract both the Rack and Pinion Boot and the breather tube from the gear assembly while documenting tube position on gear before disassembly. Installation of the replacement Rack and Pinion Boot begins by putting a new boot clamp on first and then greasing the inner tie rod assembly and Rack And Pinion gear assembly before boot installation onto the inner tie rod assembly. When installing the rack pinion boot the breather tube must be positioned along the previously marked spot against the molded nipple of the boot. The gear assembly groove should receive the Rack and Pinion Boot installation without any twisting or puckering movements. Installation of the boot clamp on the Rack and Pinion Boot requires the service boot clamp installer (J 22610) to both install and execute crimping operations. Use plier pinch to move the tie rod end clamp over the Rack and Pinion Boot before hooking back the hexagon jam nut on the inner tie rod assembly.
