2005 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Start by examining the brake master cylinder auxiliary reservoir fluid level; you need no action if its mark is at midpoint yet must lower it to midpoint when fluid reached higher than this point. Lift the vehicle and take both tire and wheel parts from their location. Fix two wheel nuts tightly into opposite wheel studs to connect the rotor to the hub. Thoroughly squeeze the caliper piston 1mm using a large c-clamp against the rear of the caliper and the outer Brake Pad. Hold the piston gently to stop it from damaging the adjusting mechanism. With proper wrench placement you can take out the brake caliper guide pin bolts from their slots. Secure the brake caliper with mechanic's wire through heavy mechanic's wire to safeguard the hydraulic brake hose when taking it off from the mounting bracket. Clean the surfaces that link the caliper bracket to the Brake Pad retainers and remove them from the caliper bracket for further cleaning. Test each brake caliper guide pin for movement and check its boots' state before replacing these components when damage or impairments are seen. Use a spanner wrench type caliper piston installer to pull the piston completely back into the caliper's bore space. Brush on thin silicone brake lubricant to pad hardware surfaces on the caliper bracket before adding the Brake Pad retainers. Place the rotation-edge-side Brake Pad into position on the caliper bracket inboard and mount the disc Brake Pad wear sensor on the inner pad. Fit the caliper to support as you position it above brake pads and the caliper mounting bracket. Tighten brake caliper guide pin bolts to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.) torque. Put the tire and wheel set into place while removing wheel nuts. Afterwards lower the car to the ground. Press the brake pedal gradually to 2/3 of its range and slowly release it. Keep the engine off during this process and apply the brake pedal again after 15 seconds to tightly seat the brake caliper pistons and pads. Complete the master cylinder reservoir then run the pads and rotors.
