2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Brake Pad Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the rear brake pads on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Examine the auxiliary brake master cylinder reservoir for fluid level first. Pads will get replaced without fluid removing when the level crosses midway between maximum and minimum points but reducing it to the midpoint is needed when the fluid sits above this level. Place the car on a jack then take off the whole tire and wheel unit. Put two wheel nuts on opposite wheel studs and make them secure hand tight to hold the rotor on the hub. To protect the adjustment mechanisms apply a large c-clamp over the caliper body with both ends pressing against its back and the outer Brake Pad before tightening just until the caliper piston compresses 1 mm (0.039 inch). Apply your wrench tools on the guide pins to take out the caliper guide pin bolts after you detach the c-clamp. Lock the brake caliper from falling with strong mechanic's wire to protect the hydraulic flexible brake hose. Take the caliper off its bracket while leaving the hose attached and fix it with wire. Wipe off all particles and rust from the caliper mounting bracket's parts before removing the brake pads and retainers. Check if guide pins in the brake caliper move freely and replace guide pin boots when they show problems. Push the piston deeper into the caliper housing using a spanner wrench tool. Smoothly apply high-temp silicone brake lubricant onto the caliper bracket's pad hardware attachment areas then mount the Brake Pad retainers. Keep the sensors in brake pads between the rotor and wheel during forward wheel movement. Place brake pads on caliper bracket then take off support to put caliper onto brake discs and attach it to caliper bracket. Fasten the guide pin bolts of the brake caliper firmly to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs. Torque). Place the brake rotor wheel nuts back in their position and attach the tire wheel set before lowering the vehicle. When the engine is turned off start to depress the brake pedal until its movement reaches 2/3 of its range before letting go slowly. Press the brake pedal twice 15 seconds apart to enable brake caliper pistons and pads to take their proper position. Complete the brake fluid reservoir to make sure it reaches the designated mark before doing pad and rotor finishing tasks.
