2006 Chevrolet Cobalt Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake pads on 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt?
A: Begin replacing the front brake pads only when the brake master cylinder reservoir shows above halfway between its limits. Use jacking points to lift the vehicle. After that take out the tire assembly along with its wheel. Place two wheel nuts tightly by hand onto wheel studs located opposite each other to secure the rotor to its hub position. Apply a large c-clamp over the brake caliper body so its ends rest against the rear of the caliper and outboard Brake Pad. Tighten the clamp until the caliper piston compresses enough to move past the brake rotor. Lower the brake caliper using mechanic wire to protect the hydraulic hose while undoing the c-clamp and lower guide pin bolt. Float the caliper upwards without disconnecting the hose before taking out both brake pads and Brake Pad retainers on the caliper bracket. After cleaning the caliper bracket surfaces check the guide pin movement and inspect the guide pin boots for damage or problems. Replace all restricted, loose, seized, or damaged parts. Push the caliper piston all the way back into its bore using a large c-clamp. Use high temperature silicone brake lubricant on the caliper bracket surface only and apply it to the pad hardware locations. Place the Brake Pad retainer and new pads on the caliper bracket using the Brake Pad that matches the wear sensor mount direction and rotor position. Put the brake caliper on top of the pads and mounting bracket with a 90-degree rotation. Screw in the lower guide pin bolt and tight it to 34 nm (25 ft. Lbs.). Fasten the tire and wheel assembly to the vehicle while removing its wheel nuts. Lower the vehicle back to the ground afterward. Press the brake pedal gradually until it reaches two-third distance while the engine remains off. Then let go of the brake gently. Push the brake pedal for 15 seconds then repeat the step until a strong braking feeling helps seat the brake pistons inside the caliper. Top off the master cylinder auxiliary tank then prepare the brake system by padding the rotors and discs.
